10 Year Old In Horrible Abdomnial Pain Help! Posted: 03-14-04 07:37am
Last friday started the nightmare. My 10
year old son doubled over in pain that
lasted 12 hours and it only ended after
they gave him a iv pain medicine. The
doctors at the er ran several tests and
they came back fine. So we went home to
return on monday with the same problem and
they did the same as they had on friday.
Does anyone have any experience and
advice? I am trying to get him in with a
pediatric gi doc., but it appears to be a
long wait. The doctor at the er gave me a
rx for bentyl and that appears to help
some, I am at my witts end its so very
hard watching such a small person in so
much pain and you the adult the mommy
helpless. My pediatrician is no help.

I will not speculate on your sons problem
as I don't believe it is necessarily
helpful to introduce potential new
worries.
I think your decision to see a specialist
is the right one.
I would suggest
- trying more than one specialist for an
appointment
- seeing whether your local md/gp has an
appropriate contact they can use to
arrange a quick appointment.
- calling the specialist daily looking for
short notice cancellations that you maybe
able to slip in on.

Thank you mike for replying. I will try
several doctors, and I will stay on my
docs case about getting him seen now!

I will assume that the drs checked the
usual like appendicitis, hernia blocked
intestines etc?
My daughter (15) had suffered for years
with severe constipation (others get
diarrhoea) & pains about 1-2 hours
after eating, this is now resolved as she
self-diagnosed herself by searching
on-line search engines re her symptoms and
discovered "irritable bowel syndrome"
which is one of another of auto immune
diseases which can mimic each other and
which can cause severe stomache pain, loss
of (or gain) weight etc etc.
I am not saying that this is your son's
trouble merely showing that it can be very
worthwhile to do some research on-line via
search engines to see what can cause your
symptoms & also what can alleviate the
symptoms.
Another thing that can cause severe
stomache pain which most people & drs
forget is allergies!! So consider whether
there is anything new around or anything
that your son ate or played near on both
ocassions - remember also that you can
develop allergies to things that you were
fine with!!!!!!!!!!

When I was lil that same thing happened to
me only it last for months bc my doctor
never checked my apendix. I had to have
an apendectimy and it burst as they were
taking it out of me. You might want to
look into that just in case that is the
problem before it gets bad. I hope he
gets better soon.
Good luck

My 10yr old son suffered costant pains in
stomach, feeling of throwing up for several
years. Kept going to pedi doc where they
did blood work, x-rays. Then went to pedi
gastro and all felt severe constipation.
His x-rays showed so much "stuff" in his
intestines coupled with acid reflux that
he was misearable for years. We had a
regime of fiber and laxatives and this is
how constipated he was b/c most people
taking that much to go have a bowel
movement would of done so but not him,
thats how constipated he was. We kept on
this regime and then someone told me of
her daughter having same problem and they
went chiropractor and she felt much
better. We did that and lo and behold he
has been constipation free for some time.
I don't know if thats what your child
might have but I know how you feel.

Similar problem, started a 4 to 5 years,
then continued on and off, with less than
normal weight gain. Finally at 19, he was
diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic,
undiagnosed, even though he spent 3 days
in the hospital with every possible test.
Be aware, a virus could be attacking the
pancreas at this stage. I would call
joslin clinic in boston to see if they
have any similar experince.
