Huge Medical Bill - Bankruptcy ? Posted: 08-03-07 20:43pm


I was hospitalized for several weeks in2005. I have been trying to pay this bill for 2 years and hardly making a dent. Friends have suggested I apply for bankruptcy. What would this do to my financial future? I rent a small apt.,have an older car some furniture and a a very small Ira. Will they make me sell everything or are some possessions allowed? I know it will be bad for credit but I don't know any other options.

Due to the mess the healthcare system is in, I'm sure there are many in your situation. Maybe someone will have a suggestion. In the meantime, you could check your states laws regarding backruptcy.

Talk to the hostpital and see if they can reduce your bill. IF you do not make a lot of money, most hospitals have what is called 'Charity care', and your bill could be reduced a lot. Bankruptcy would affect you in MANY ways, from buying a house, a car, and even getting simple credit to straighten your life out. Keep paying the bill, ANYTHING you can pay each month, whether it is 10$ or 100$... Medical bills on the credit report do not look as negative as bankruptcy.

I agree with Carifairy. Talk to the hospital. It always amazes me that people have old hospital debts. Hospitals write this off as 'charity' all the time - reducing bills, etc. Call and talk to them. And, if you don't like the answer the first person gives you, speak with someone else. Good luck!
