My daughter was in the hospital. She had
a bad nurse. The nurse flushed her IV 3
times. It was very painful to my daughter
and the third time, my daughter screamed
with pain and said it felt as if a hot
knife was slicing open her vein. The
nurse said the blood was not flowing fast
enough and she needed to flush the line.
My daughter asked her to go slow. The
fourth flushing was done by a different
nurse. It was not painful. Did the bad
nurse do something wrong. My daughter's
arm was parylized for a period of time and
her body shook for an hour. I had to put
5 blankets on her to stop the shaking.
She had an anxiety attack.
Should I report this nurse? Will there be
any long term effects of this for my
daughter. She is 22 years old and just
had a total knee replacement. This
hospital stay has traumatized her. We had
to stay in the hospital with her for the
rest of her stay because she was so afraid
they would hurt her again.

I would definitely report the
nurse. She clearly had no idea what she
was doing. I know from experience that IV
flushing can be very painful, even to a
catatonic patient. My grandfather was
unconscious after an operation this
winter. A nurse accidentally put two IVs
on the same injector and not only did his
heart rate, pulse, and blood pressure
increase, but he visibly grimaced and
tried to move. She pulled it out
immediately, as she realized it was a
mistake. She didn't keep doing it over and
over again
I don't think there will be any lasting
physical harm from it, but mentally I do
hope that your daughter can overcome this.
I'm sure it was very painful. If you can
get that nurse reported and have actions
taken, that may help your daughter.
