Q: 24 Weeks Pregnant W/ a New Job

Hey everyone! I finally got a new job today after not having one since May. I'm so happy about this, because we really need it esp since we have absolutely nothing for the baby yet and what not. At most I'll be working about 4 months by the time the baby is due, and it's a really easy job...cashiering at Kohls. My question is, I go in tomorrow for an orientation, should I ask about the policy on maternity leave then or wait until I've been working like a month? Thanks! Very Happy ~*Amy*~

hey congrats on the new job! Very Happy i would wait. i had been looking for one before i lost the baby and because i was so bloated and looked pregnant i think that they were discriminating about me being pregnant and no one wanted to hire me so if they dont ask dont tell until you get your foot in the door. thats my opinion

I would ask about it right away. Because if they don't offer anything you might need to look into ways of getting by when you take of leave. The job i have not doesn't offer any type of paid leave. So i have to find other ways to keep the bills up while i am off from having the baby. Which also means i won't be off but only 3 weeks Sad

Well I'm pretty sure they noticed when I interviewed, because I wasn't trying to hide the fact that I was pregnant.

You will only be off for three weeks after you have your baby?

All I know is here in Canada its about how many hours you have put in. It's not really based on your job. So, if you're there for a year they give you a year etc. I would find out what the standard is in the US because it could be different. You could just find out that way too. Without having to talk to your employer. Congrats on the job.

Aw I'm sorry that happened to you. I had basically given up on the fact that someone would hire me, but I guess I was wrong. Plus it's retail, so I don't think they care so much unlike they might have if I was applying for a business type job.
I know this might sound funny, but are you even required to take maternity leave? I'll only be part-time, and when I deliver it'll be around the christmas shopping season. I'm just asking this because I don't want them to find a reason to fire me once they know that's when I'm due...for any reason.

I know in Canada they can't fire you for being pregnant. If you go to work everyday on time. I think you'll be fine.. How far along are you? I don't think you would have to take a maturnity leave

I'm 24 weeks now. I was just wondering. I think I would rather work like 10-15 hrs a week than go on maternity leave that was un-paid.

congrats on the new job!

if they know you're pregnant you might as well mention it now. i'm not sure what you'll be asking about though. most retail jobs don't offer any sort of maternity benefits, especially if it's only PT. they may "hold" your job for you and offer you a position when you're ready to return. is that what you're going to ask about?

i hope you get a good discount! i've bought 90% of finn's clothes at kohl's and i'd go nuts there if i had a discount.

LOL. We get 15% of everything, even clearance/sale stuff and there's also days where we get an extra 15% off on top of that. Very Happy I didn't know that most retail jobs didn't offer maternity benefits, but I will ask what's their policy for when I need to leave to have the baby.

In canada its not about where you work its whether or notyou contributed enough to employment insurance or not, not sure how it works in the USA.
I would take the job for sure, and if you were not hiding it I would let them know and ask about mat benefits...so while you are working there you can try to find another job.
Are you a permanent employee?? like did they give you a FT position?
Or are you Casual like...??

Well I'm part time since I'm going to college full time. If there's no sort of maternity benefits, then I guess my fiance will have to work over time or find a part time job. There's no way I can work full time or 2 part time jobs and deal with college. Confused I would die.
