Severe Chronic Pain
Posted: 08-08-07 21:15pm

This chronic pain started last summer, it started with a little bit of pain, and then it was getting worse, i saw a chiropractor -he sayed that i needed orthortic, i didnt have the money then so i didn buy them.so i let it be but i was still continuing the pain...getting to the point that i have trouble walking because of the pain. the pain isnt just on one leg its on both of them. around christmas time, i got fed up stated going to wakl-in clinics hospitals.. putting me on muscle relaxants, tendonitis pills. nothing worked. Now i'm on nerve pills,(Plus painkillers when the pain is just too horrible) and the pills are working great on some days and horrible the next second. there is no specific time of day, or time. i do get even more pain from stress.

Iget too many muscle spasms, ex: like in one week i got 5 spasms, 3 on 1 legs, and 2 on the other. they get swelled up, trouble walking, takes at least 5 days to recover.

I went for 2 blood tests, for different things, nothing came up. Went for a EMG testing, my leg symptoms just got worse. Went to see another chiropractor and sayed it might be because my hips arent aligned and my symptoms got worse again there.

I just need help to find what the problem is

Hi Petit

Sorry to hear that you are having so much pain....
To try and post you to the best forum, and help you, I need to ask where on your body you initially got the pain last summer, was it lower back or down the back of your legs ? .. as you know, leg pain may stem from the lower back, there may be a trapping of the sciatic nerve and causing sciatica ...

I have had this myself, and I know the pain it causes, and the discomfort of walking and laying down.

I would insist on a MRI scan, so they can determine if there is a problem with any trapped nerves ....

Please come back to me with more specific details, so we can help you more...

Take care

The pain initially started in the legs, throbbing pains, so unbearable that i have trouble walking.

I asked my doctor to get an MRI, but he sayed to wait until my EMG results come back and that isnt until the beginning of september. he sayed that nothing will probably show up.

just hope that they can find the problem , i cant stand the pain anymore.

Thank you very much for helping me.

Hi again

You're welcome ... and it's a pleasure to help.

Is the pain a 'stabbing' pain or a 'cramping' pain?

I'm experiencing 'cramping' pains myself at present, but I know why and I also know how to temporary ease it ..
I had an op on my spine last year, and as I wasn't using some of the muscles in my legs normally, they are now recovering, and as I use them more, they cramp, but it will ease as I excersise them..

Please try not to stress over it too much, I know it's easy for me to sit here and say it to you, but the less tense you are, the better.

I take it you are taking anti-inflamatories to reduce any inflamation in your body. This again, will ease ithe pain n some cases.

I am going to re-post your query in both 'Back Pain' and 'Muscle' Forums..
In these forums are others like yourself that may be experiencing the same as you, and for you to share and support, it will also help you understand a little better what may be the problem.

I will keep an eye out for you, make sure you are taken care of...

In the meantime, if you need to ask anything or inform me of further developments, then you can always PM me (click on my name next to my picture, and then send me a message)

I hope that the EMG will show up any problems, then you can be treated accordingly for this pain. If not insist on a MRI, if the doctor is non-responsive to your request ask to see another consultant .... you have the rights to a second opinion.

Take care friend, and stay in touch.

Severe Chronic Leg Pains

Hi Ginger, It's both cramping and trobbing pains.

the pill that i'm taking right now, are lyrica's it's nerve pillsand they are working better than the other pills that i tried. I also take tramacets = pain killers. i try not to take them too often.

Right now i'm just waiting for the results. my appointment is sept 4th, so we'll see then. my boyfriend will make sure tha they find the problem, it's been going on too long.

Thank you for all of your advise, I will do my best to be less tense, and get that MRI.

Thanks,
Lissa

Hi Lissa

I'm so glad you got support from your boyfriend, he's right, the longer it goes on the worse it may get. So let him push the doctors for a quicker result.... he doesn't have to be angry with them, just direct and determined with them.

I read back, and your chiropractor states that your hips aren't aligned ..I must say, a statement like that coming from a professional person is contradictory, as no one's body is symmetrical in the first place, as we tend to naturally lean when we stand anyway ! However, if your hips are that much 'out of line' the hospital would have noticed it. Did you mention that to the hospital doctor when you saw them, if not, it may be worth mentioning just for ease of mind, and to either elaborate on that or eliminate it !!

Although it may be painful, when (if) you go into spasm again, try and relax and massage the area, it really sounds like that pain is very much what I am also experiencing myself, although, mine is spasming because I haven't used that particular muscle or felt the nerves for ages, and now I'm excersising it more, it likes to let me know it's 'growing and getting stronger' like a bad growing pain, so to rub the area, stimulates the nerves.
Nerves are like endless electical probes sending signals in the body that make up our bodies sence of touch, feeling, heat, cold etc., so to damage one or trapping it, is like receiving an electric shock, as it tries to send out signals.

I didn't ask, but have you been doing any gym or weight lifting Laughing or any different kind of excersising of sorts, something that may have caused a trapped nerve or a torn muscle ?

I've looked up Lyrica, and they treat Nerve Pain, and other nerve problems, so at least you are getting the right pill to take. ( I must get some of them myself) Wink

I hope that this is becoming more clearer to you the more we chat, I'm no expert at this, but it helps to see what may be causing the problem, half the battle of this, is knowing what's wrong the other half is getting it better ... so I hope that the results in Sept reveal the real reason, so your doctor can treat it accordingly.

Best Wishes and Take care (the both of you)

I am sorry for the pain you are going through. It is so hard to help without knowing the cause. I am assuming that your physician believes your leg pain is originating in your spine. In which case, and MRI would be good, as will the EMG studies in showing the origin of the pain so that it can be properly treated. September is a long time to wait. Perhaps you could call and see if there has been a cancellation to get your appointment moved up? I should have looked to see what your location is, though, as I know access to medical care varies greatly by where you are geographically. Once they dtermine a reason for your pain, if it is spinal in nature, perhaps a course of physical therapy and injectiosn will be of aid to you. Please keep us posted as to the results of your tests.

Best of luck
