I'm sure this has been discussed a lot. I am new here and have a pretty bad case of it. I tried to do a little stretching and it's made my leg feel like it's on fire. Any suggestions? I've done chiropractor and I've am taking a lot of pain reliever right now. I have a new job coming up (of course it's sitting down) and really need to manage my pain. I did the surgery thing 6 years ago and don't want to go down that road again. Help!

Hello SheRa,

May I suggest that you go to a pain management doctor.

When my back pain started to travel down my leg I decided it was time to see a spine surgeon. I did, in fact I asked for the advice from four surgeons. A couple doctors thought I should seek the advice of a pain management doctor. They thought that perhaps an epidural injection might help.

I talked to several people who had epidural injections (the one with cortisone) and most said the injections did nothing for them. SOOooo I didn't have a positive outlook for a epidural.

I did see a PM doc and he convinced me to give an epidural injection a try. He reviewed my MRIs thoroughly and determined which disc was pinching the nerve. Came time for the injection and he used a fluoroscope to help show him where he needed to guide the needle to the exact spot where the nerve was pinched.

WELLLllll by that evening my wife told me that I was walking a bit straighter. By morning I could tell things were somewhat better. Within a week the pain in my leg was gone. Forgot to mention that I had a tingling sensation in the lower part of my leg before the injection. Two months after the injection the tingling sensation was gone.

Oh, I still can't stand in one spot, or sit in an uncomfortable chair, but I can function much better than I could before the injection.

Perhaps this would also work for you.

For immediate relief, an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen will help. A spinal decompression device that you lay on might help as well - there are several out there. I use such a device and it helps a lot with my sciatica. Actually, now, I have virtually no sciatica.

Try an other one. And ask first if that DC understands about sacroiliac joint locks/blocks. Well, they all claim they do, but ask how common that DC thinks they are. If DC answers they are very common conserning basicly every patient then you can try that DC. He might be good. Many are not.
