Just a Couple of Birth Control Questions!
Posted: 08-14-07 02:08am

I'm new to the whole birth control thing and only started taking it because I was very irregular and needed something to help with that. I'm on Yaz, which is 28 pills, I believe. I started taking it last month, I guess... I finished one pack and started on my current pack last Tuesday. I know my body is still adjusting since I just started it, but I didn't start my period until last Tuesday, which was the day that I started the new pack, and I'm still bleeding. It has gotten almost non-existent, but I'm just wondering when it's going to stop! I used to have VERY heavy periods that would last up to 7 days, and this one was no different until a couple of days ago, it was VERY heavy and I still had pretty bad cramps, so is it just that my body is still adjusting or is the pill not working as well as it's supposed to? I was under the impression that it was going to help with my cramps and make my periods lighter. I'm assuming that it's just me adjusting, but wanted to check and I didn't want to call the doctor so soon to ask.

I'm also wondering what I might be able to do about skipping my next period or making it come sooner or like a week later... I know that it's something that may not work the first time, but my boyfriend and I are going to Mexico, leaving on the day that I would start my new pack, and being that I didn't start my period until that day this time, that would mean I'd have my period on our whole trip. And if it's as bad as this one was, it won't be a fun vacation. This vacation has been planned since before I started taking my pills and had I realized it, I would have started taking them at a different time! Me getting pregnant isn't anything to worry about (we don't have sex), so not taking enough pills or taking too many or whatever and me getting pregnant isn't what I worry about, I just don't want to screw up my body. So, I was trying to figure out if maybe I could take a few more pills from a new pack and then start taking the replacement pills or whatever they are towards the end of my vacation, so that I hopefully wouldn't start until I got home.

That might not make any sense, but I was just curious. I wish I could just change our vacation!

Thanks so much! Smile

Ususally when you are on bc pills, you cannot shorten your active pills and make the period come sooner, or you mess up your birth control protection.
Since you are not having sex, it is not so much of a concern!

You can try and make your period come later, by skipping, but it may not work the first time. You could also try and make it come earlier.

Basically, your period on BC is what is called a "Withdrawal bleed". You are only bleeding because of the drop in BC hormones. Your body needs time to register this drop in levels, and then you bleed.

The first 1-3 months on BC can be an adjustment for your body, and you kinda have to ride it out.

Since you are not sexually active, you can 'tinker around' a little bit and see what happens.

The only problem is that your body is different than mine, and any other womans, so I cannot exactly tell you what will in fact happen.

Thanks!

I figured that since pregnancy wasn't my main concern that it would be more ok for me to try and skip it or make it come early. I haven't had a period since April and I finally had/am having one, only because of the pills. So I think that if I don't take the replacements or if I take them early, my body isn't on enough of a schedule or anything and it will just do what it thinks it should because of the extra pills or lack of them, if that makes any sense. So, I just have to try and figure out which might work best. Since I've been bleeding for a week now, I may try and just skip the next one, or make it wait until I get back from my trip, since I don't know how long it will last the next time, I'd just rather deal with it once I get home!

Thanks again for your advice! Smile
