Addiction to Nortriptolyne Posted: 08-16-07 11:27am
I have been taking nortriptolyne since
1991 for a nerve pain. A nerve root was
damaged during a spinal surgery which
caused horrible neuropathic pain. The
nortriptolyne saved my life. It not only
helped my nerve pain, but it also help the
major depression that I had suffered since
I was a teenager.
I have been having a problem with oral
thrush. I'm on several medications one
takes as they get older, cholesterol,
blood pressure, etc. The doctor has taken
me off nortriptolyne as she feels it is
the medication that causes dry mouth more
than the others. I've had the dry mouth
problem for years, but the last two have
been bad. I've had the oral thrush for
over a year.
My normal dosage of nortriptolyne has been
200 mg a day. I have been backing off for
a couple of months now to see if this
helps. I was down to one pill and not
feeling very stable (blues, crying). I
have been totally of the nortriptolyne
(about 2 weeks), I have been crying on and
off all day and just feel miserable. What
I'd like to know if I am addicted to
nortriptolyne or this is just something my
body is going through and that it will be
okay to start taking it again when I get
rid of my oral thrush.
Thanks,
Sandy

Hi Sandy, sorry no one has answered your
post. I too was put on Nortriptyline last
year to control headaches. I started out
in small doses, 10mg and went to 70mg, now
I take 75mg every night.....I tried to
take one 100mg and it made me feel really
strange.....I can't tolerate that feeling
and can not for the life of me imagine
taking 200mg. I would like to say coming
off antidepressants can take its toll on
you, you ahve to ween off them gradually.
Have you been diagnosed as depressed? If
so, why would this doctor take this away
from you. In reality its Elavil, and can
work for all kinds of problems. It sure
keeps e from having migraines.....and from
crying. I'd talk to your doctor and tell
them the things you have written here that
your are experiencing. Maybe you need to
be put on somehting else...its a chemical
imbalance thing most folks would not
understand! Hope this has helped!
