Does anyone know if allergy medication
such as Benedryl or Zyrtec interacts with
the pill's effectiveness at all? I'm on
Lutera.
Also, what about multivitamins like
Viactiv chews? I can't imagine why it
would interfere with the pill, but I don't
understand the science well enough to not
worry...
Thanks!

I don't think the allergy medicines could
affect it, and I don't really think the
viactiv (that's just calcium, right?)
would at all.
However, it's never difficult to give a
quick call to the pharmacist.... I always
check when I want to take something.

I don't think that's true-
antibiotics, steroids, St. John's wort,
anticonvulsants, (as well as those used
for mental health purposes) can all have
effects. And certain painkillers (tylenol)
can be less effective on certain types of
birth control.
Like I said, you're probably fine but it
never hurts to call a doc.
I have a friend in her third year of
pharmacy school who also works as a
pharmacy tech and she looks these things
up in a database for me. You should always
check to be sure. It is not just
antibiotics.

Okay, thanks for the info! I'm pretty
sure I asked the Planned Parenthood person
about Benedryl and Advil when I first went
on the pill, and I think she said it was
fine...it was just a while ago now, and my
memories of that day and what specifically
we talked about are a little fuzzy...
I think you are right...it is probably
fine...but I think I will follow your
advice and put a call in anyway...
Thanks again!

Just to clear something up for anyone
finding this page from a search or
something... I had to call my pharmacist
and ask because I couldn't find anything
online. Barbituate anticonvulsants
interfere with birth control, but
benzodiazepines (i.e. klonopin, xanax) do
not.
