Positive Pregnancy Tests After Total Hysterectomy Posted: 08-21-07 16:33pm
I am a 24 year old single mom, and I had a
total hysterectomy and oophorectomy in
January 2006. Yesterday after being sick
for three days with nausea, vommitting and
abdominal pain I went to the local
emergency room. After they did several
tests the doctor came back with shocking
news. They had done both a urine and blood
serum pregnancy test and both of them came
back positive. This came as a shock not
only to me, but to the doctor there as
well. I was wondering if anyone new what
would cause my body to think that it is
pregnant even though there is no
anatomical means to create a baby. The
pain is still severe, as well as the
nausea and vomitting, but the ER doctor
stated that she did not think that i was
life threatening, so she sent me home with
out any kind of explanation as to why my
body is thinking that it is pregnant a
year and a half after a total
hysterectomy. Any insight in this matter
would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou
very much.

Do you have another appointment with your
regular doctor? A specialist? You should
be having some kind of follow up care.

Hey,
I am 42 years old. Because of a terribly
advanced case of endometriosis (so
advanced that my CA-125 test results can
back extremely elevated) I had to have a
total hysterectomy (removal of ovaries,
tubes and uterus) 8 years ago. In fact
the surgery took extra long because a
bladder specialist had to come in to help
separate my bladder which was fused
together along with other organs with
endometrial scar tissue.
Today, I tested positive today for
pregnancy twice with urine and once with
blood. Because of those results I could
not have a much needed surgery(not female
related)! What's really up? Verified
with the doctor and medical records
post-op information that the hysterectomy
was performed and that it was a total
hysterectomy. Very frustrated, in pain
and concerned. Any ideas?

I would follow up with another Dr. There
can be other reasons for an elevated HCG,
which is what you have. Pregnancy tests
only test for this hormone to indicate
pregnancy but there are other reasons it
could be elevated. Find another Dr. if
this one won't listen.

Double Hey,
After being turned down Monday for surgery
because two urinalysis and a blood test
showed positive for pregnancy... totally
bugged and perplexed I went to my doctor's
office today (Wednesday) (via urgent care)
and without giving any history requested a
pregnancy test. The doctor confused as to
why I would want one since it is
impossible for me to be pregnant (total
hysterectomy 8 yrs ago)...I explained to
him the story above and stated that since
I know that I am not pregnant, something
must be badly wrong with me. We did a
pregnancy test and a complete urinalysis
... pregnancy test -negative... urinalysis
... completely normal - no protein, blood,
etc.
Which means that the other doctor
completely wasted my time. I could have
had surgery. Now I think I am becoming
quite angry. I requested my medical
records from my Primary Care Physician
(the negative pg test) and from the
worker's compensation hospital - and I am
going to take them to a nuetral doctor to
compare the reports... and if need be have
him give me another.
