I have been experiencing lower abdominal pain for a few years, I always put it down to constipation. Recently however I have wondered if it was menstral related as it usually occurs inbetween periods.
After a extremely painful bout of pain last week I actually decided to mention it to my doctor, who said it could be mittelschmertz (ovulation pain).
After reading up on this condition I wonder if my symptoms fit, I have read that people get ovary pain on either side (left or right), my pain is always central, its very similar to my period pains, I feel bloated, with a weighted dragging down feeling, with extremely painful cramps that peak and then subside and return (i guess a lot like contractions), I also sometimes get a shooting pain thought my backside (which is why I thought it was constipation).

I would like to hear from anyone who has similar symptoms to mine to discuss their experiences and diagnosis.

Thanks in advance

Hey, when I was younger, about 16 or so (i'm 20 now) I had what I was tol to be mittlesmertz (sp?) this occured off and on for about a year and nothing I did relieved the pain (pain meds, birth control, exercising to release endorphins) my pain was always on the lower left side. After I continually complained to my (ex) doctor for a year, he finally decided to do an ultrasound. What they found were cysts on my left ovary. Non-cancerous, thank god, but cysts none the less. As it turned out, it was just a different birth control pill of differernt hormone levels that was needed to prevent them from happinging all over again (more progesterone, I think). Still, it was really scary! As far as your pain being in the middle, i'm not too sure if it's still ovulation related, but i'm no doc! You could always ask a few more questions, and maybe get a referral for an ultrasound during your next ovulation period to get things checked out. Hope everything works out for you! Let us know what happens!
Take care

Hi like the previous respondant I too have this type of pain most months and mine is related to an ovarian cyst that I have had for 4 months now, it is not cancerous but is being monitered regularly and will be removed if it doesnt go on its own, you should go back to your doctor and request an ultrasound to check for cysts, in the meantime take one evening primrose capsule every day and the pain will go after about 2 months, thats what I did and I have no bother now and lighter periods.

Sad I have been having the same symptoms as you. I went to the emergency room last night and had all kinds of tests run. They gave me an iv with salene and pain killer and I also had a catscan. I have had an ovarian cyst that ruputred once before but the pain I am feeling now is much more excruciating. My symptoms are very similar to yours and that's why i'm replying to you. I also had blood in my urine and asked if I had a history of kidney stones. I don't so I know I don't have to worry about that. The only thing that is a little different is that I find myself to be very gasey. I'm very bloated and the pain is the worst when I walk around, stand up and sit back down again. The doctor diagnosed "mittel-schmertz" and told me to follow up with my obgyn. I will definately be doing that. My advice though for anyone experiencing this kind of pain is, don't ignore it. Even if it turns out to be nothing, always get it checked out. If your as young as I am (20) you don't want to have complications if your trying to get pregnant because you never went to see a doctor. Also, pay attention to your symptoms, if you are experiencing pain along with a fever, flu-like symptoms, or anything else out of the ordinary, see a doctor immediately. Your health is not a game of russian roulette.

I have the same pain that you are talking about, and I did see my doctor back when it started. It was diagnosed as ovulation pain. The doctor gave me napsrosen for pain which helped for a while( nothing does now).
Just be careful, because I lived with this for about 10 years, and three weeks ago I was diagnosed with endometriosis. Apparently ovulation pain is also a symptom of endo.

Wish you the best of luck in your care.

I have the worst pain the first two days of my period coming from both sides my right and left ovaries, I havent seen a doctor but I did notice this pain occurred only after an abortion I had about 5 months ago it feels like a burning sensation and it lasts all day, no pain medicine ever helps, I wonder could this be mittelsmertz (sp) ? Anyone?

Playgurlie it's not mittelschmerz if it comes when your period begins. Mittelschmerz is associated with mid cycle (ovulation) pain. Mittle means middle.

I have been diagnosed with mittelschmertz. It is very painful. Regarding cysts: follicles are cysts that rupture each month, releasing the egg. They are not the same type of cysts I presume other posters are referring to. I just don't want anyone to get confused.

Mittelschmertz can range from mild pain to excruciating (as in my case). It does feel like af pain. There may be burning/stinging where blood may irritate the abdominal lining. Spotting is very normal to have with it. Feeling dizziness and nausea are common associated symptoms.

Although most sites say that it lasts 24-48 hours. I feel mine for approximately four days; the first two are dull pains/cramping. Once the egg is released from the follicle, it's very painful for me (and feels like any other type of cyst that would rupture).

The best way to be diagnosed is through an ultrasound. I went into the er the morning after the egg released, so we could clearly see the remains of the follicle (which is great for confirming ovulation!) we were also able to see other eggs developing, blood flow, healthy endometrium, tubes, and ovaries.

For anyone who suspects mittelschmertz, please see your doc and do so with the onset of pain. It could be something very normal, but the symptoms also mock other serious conditions such as pcos.

Gl and best wishes to all

Just Diagnosed!
Posted: 12-01-05 12:34pm

After a 2 day run in the hospital, i've just been diagnosed with mittelschmertz. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to take for the pain? I'm seeing my ob/gyn tomorrow, but i'd like to get some info sooner if I could.

Thanks in advance!

I Have Middle Pains
Posted: 12-01-05 12:48pm

I have noticed them for the past 10 years I guess. I have them for 5 days--always 5 days. And they hurt me in both ovaries, I also feel the pain in my back over where my ovaries are located. My pain is not severe, but it is there none the less.

Sorry to hear about your trip to the hospital. I know it's stressful, although I was relieved to hear it was only mittelschmertz and not something like pcos!

For pain relief, you can take tylenol. It's not recommended that you use anything like aspirin or ibuprofen as these have a negative effect on cervical mucus and implantation.

If you experience spotting, you can always take b-50 complex in addition to your regular daily multi (as long as you don't exceed your doctors' recommended dosage).

My regular email is rphun tington@gmail.Com. If anyone has questions or concerns, i'll do my best to help.

Hoping we all get christmas bfp's!
