How to Help Someone With An Eating Disorder?
Posted: 08-22-07 11:26am

My girlfriend recently told me that she binges and purges and sometimes even goes a few days without eating at all and I understand that her confiding in me was something of a cry for help. Also, she told me she wants to stop doing it and get control of it, but when I talk to her about it she doesn't seem to acknowedge that it is even a problem. She just says things like "I'm fine" and "I'm not going to hurt myself". But I mean, she IS hurting herself already. I was just hoping that someone could give me some tips on how to deal with her and how to help her get better. Please no suggestions about therapy or about getting her into a treatment center. Both are out of the question. If i thought there was any way to get her into either, I would have already done it. She was in treatment for anorexia about 2 years ago and she doesn't want to go throught that again. Please, I will accept any advice from anyone.

there's nothing I can do to help her at all? She says I need to be strong for her and just be there for her but I guess I'm just not really sure what she means for me to do by that? It seems like she wants me to just sit here and watch her suffer with it and not do anything to proactively help her and that is hard for me. I just want to make it easier for her though and I have no idea how to.

Of course that are things you can do!
Go for a long walk with her - it really helps. Grab a bottle of water and walk walk walk in a pretty place Smile And this is only one idea Wink

Good luck!

Hi

You might explain to her, everytime she makes herself YAK (the acid from her stomach is coming up into her mouth via esophugus) and this causes damage to her esophogus lining, not to menton what its doing to her teeth. She also take a risk of the little flap (not sure what its called) that stops food from coming back up to slip the wrong direction everytime she blows chunks, she could literally choke to death on her own vomit. Scare tactic sometimes helps! Sould she conside outpatient therapy? She needs some type of help, its an emotional disorder and she needs professional help. You are really someone special for toughing it out wiht her! Good luck!
