Iud Pregnancy Posted: 08-25-07 00:21am
I need advice! I just recently found out
I was pregnant and I have an IUD in place.
I went to my doctor and they told me I
have to wait for the next available
appointment which is almost two weeks away
to get the IUD removed. Is this something
serious that needs to be taken care of
immediately or is it safe to wait? I am
currently around 5 weeks along but been
bleeding (not heavily) for the last week.
The staff at my doctor's office seems to
act like it is no big deal. Am I just
being paranoid? Please help!

Pregnancy: If you think you are pregnant,
you should have your IUD removed. A
pregnancy that results while a woman is
wearing an IUD increases her risk of en
ectopic pregnancy, serious pelvic
infection, preterm labor and miscarriage.
During the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, a
woman who has an IUD in place has a 15 to
50% chance of miscarrying. After this
time, the risk goes up to 50%.
If you become pregnant with an IUD in
place, your health professional may
recommend that the IUD be removed. This is
because the IUD can cause miscarriage or
preterm birth (the IUD will not cause
birth defects). Taking out an IUD early in
a pregnancy lowers risks of miscarriage or
preterm birth. However, IUD removal can
also cause a miscarriage. As a pregnancy
progresses, miscarriage risk is lower if
an IUD is removed than if it is left in
place.
Hope this helps
If I were you, I'd push for an earlier
appointment but it seems as though you are
not at a significantly increased risk of
miscarriage until after 12 weeks so
perhaps that is why they are not appearing
too worried.
Good luck and I hope it all goes well for
you.

Jules gave you some great advice. Push for
your appointment to be sooner, it may not
seem big to yor dr's but if it is to you
then let them know!
