Shoulder Instability caused by hyperflexibility ?
Posted: 08-28-07 10:18am

Hello,

Is it possible that shoulder instability can be caused by hyperflexibility?

I have had problems with my right shoulder for the last 4 years (i'm 20) and have recently had it stabilised. But since then my left shoulder has started becoming more and more unstable. I've heard my physio's mention hyperflexibility being a cause of my injury - even though I actually fell down a flight of stairs.

Can anyone help? Any help would be greatly appreciated Smile

Yes.

In fact, hyper flexibility can cause many kinds of injuries. To be safe, you've got to strengthen and tone muscles around a joint. Flexible muscles give way during moments of extreme stress, and facilitate damage to the ligaments and tendons and cartilage inside a joint. Ask your PT and see what s/he says.

Hello Smile

Thanks for your replies Smile

I have spoken to my physio's about all this and didn't get much out of them so I'm going to ask my surgeon Smile. But they said my left shoulder wasn't dislocating but maybe just subluxating due to overuse.

I am currently having 2 hours of physio a week, but can't do much yet!

I'll update again soon. Thanks Smile

Are you in much pain? How much rest are you getting? Why do the physio's say, "OVERUSE"?

It's not as bad as it was I give it that, but then again it couldn't have been much worse! I'm not resting very well no, sleeping is very arkward, and my parents don't help me in the slightest so my left shoulder is having to compensate for the lack of movement in my right arm causing it to slip out slightly and hurt like crazy.

If you're still at home, are you still a student? What kind of physical activity do you do in the day?
