What Is This Little Guy?

So....I got home from my parents today and
happened to look down and here is this
blob with pin feathers. At first I thought
it was dead, but then I noticed it
breathing. So I unloaded the car and got
Adriana down for her nap then went out to
get it. I thought it was a sea gull when I
first picked it up. It has a kinda fat
beak and weird feet. Also the fuzz on it
is a whitish yellow color, despite the
black pin feathers. So I looked online
quick and I couldn't find any pics of any
this young. I didn't look long since I
don't have much time. But I couldn't just
leave him out there. There are lots of
cats around and I am just not the kind of
person that can leave a needy animal
behind. If it were bigger/older I would
have left it, but I felt the chances of
the parents finding him were slim. I've
never cared for a sea gull before...but I
have a little experience with baby birds
(I used to volunteer at SWWRC, a wildlife
rehab center) But I'm going to give them a
call and see if they can take him
tomorrow. I *think* it's a sea gull, but
if anyone knows what it is let me know!!

have you tried looking up in the walnut
tree for a nest, maybe seeing what adult
birds are frequenting the tree?

I am pretty sure it's not a mourning dove.
The black pin feathers give it the black
appearance of a crow, but I think the the
white fuzz is the color the feathers will
be. But I don't know
Just the other day I saw a sea gull run
across the road, and I couldn't stop right
there and get it, so I thought if it were
still there on my way back I would stop.
Well I had 2 babies with me, and I
couldn't get close enough to park and get
it...so I thought I'd go back later. Well
I went to go see later on that day and
someone had hit it I felt
like 2 cents. It was terrible. And now
this little guy shows up in my yard.
Earlier this summer we had a baby robin in
my daughters pool
But that one was old enough to almost be
on it's own, and mom came down to feed it
when we put it in the crotch of the tree.

arent seagulls typically white tho? I
dunno. Maybe they're different up there.
Only thing i can think of is look up in
the tree for a nest it may have fallen out
of.

Poor thing! I'm glad you found
it before a cat did! I have no idea what
it could be though but I hope that
center can take it soon!

You should look outside in the area you
found it see if thiers a nest close around
its not close to being a fledgeling so my
guess is one of thier other babies
probably kicked it out by accident. I
worked at the bird rescue center for quite
a while you mentioned you worked at animal
rescue place rite? So you probably know
quite a bit, but if you have question feel
free to ask me. My only advice at this
point is keep it worm and away from your
baby.
Oh to me its looks like a pigeon. That
would explain the darker feather quils.

Looks like a crow or a Raven to me. You
should take it to a local shelter or bird
rescue so they can properly care for it.
Once a bird has the scent of a human the
mother will not take it back into the nest
(most of the time)

Thats actually a myth. When I was
working at the bird rescue center they
told us to tell anyone who thought this
otherwise.

touching wild animals. ^_^

I am not basing this off a 'tale' I am
basing it from experience. I tried to
help a bird as a child and afterwards the
mother refused to go near it even though
she was trying to help before hand. I
watched for hours because I felt bad for
the baby bird and we had to call animal
control. I have also been told this by
multple vets with experience in this area.

it is infact not true
birds even with the human scent have the
chace of their mother takeing them back.
people started that myth a looong time
ago
even if baby birds have human scent the
mother will take it back into the nest
sometimes it takes a while but it happens
hope this helps

The baby robin we took out of the kiddie
pool was cared for by the parents
afterwards. I also hand fed some of my
baby parakeets and the parents didn't
reject them. So, it's not always true
that the parents won't take them back.
I've already mentioned I will be calling
SWWRC tomorrow, for those wondering.

Yup, I do have the bird in the meantime. I
have the bird shut in the bathroom in a
dog bowl lined with paper towel. He seems
to look comfy. Also the bathroom is the
warmest place in the house with no drafts.
I don't think it's a crow or raven, those
are both black birds. This one looks like
it will be white/cream once he's got all
his feathers. Also the beak is long and
pointed, but it gets fat in the middle. I
don't know how to explain. And he has a
weird looking tongue...which is long too

Now that I've read more, I highly doubt
it's a seagull. They nest in April and May
and you almost never see a baby because
they're really protective of their young.
Also I found this one under a tree, and
seagulls don't nest in trees. There is a
nest above where I found him, but it looks
abandoned. It looks like the nest is torn
apart.
The beak is what throws me off...because
it looks exactly like a gulls beak. And a
dove has a long roundish beak, and so does
this one, but it's not smooth like a doves
beak. I would guess a pigeon has the same
beak as a dove, but maybe not. And
doves/pigeons only lay 1 or 2 eggs in a
clutch...so that would make sense too. I
don't know
I guess I'll find out later. I really hope
they can come and get him because I'm
homebound during the week :S
