A few months ago a smear test showed that
I have HPV. My doctor called at half 8 in
the morn to tell me I had an abnormality,
refused to discuss it, and suggested I
make an appointment (private, therefore
she obviously makes a bunch of cash out of
this) to find out what it is. She then
suggested we wait to see if it cleared up
alone. I asked her if it was sexually
transmitted, and she said not necessarily.
How can a doctor say this, when sex is
the only way you can get HPV? I stopped
seeing this doctor, and the new one
confirmed that HPV is sexually
transmitted, and also prescribed a course
of FAMVIR, which cost an arm and a leg. I
researched it online, and all the info I
found said that it is used to treat
herpes. So why is this doctor giving me
FAMVIR, and for goodness' sake, do these
doctors know ANTHING? I am really upset,
am being messed around, and have NO
confidence in the doctors I am dealing
with. Please can anyone set the record
straight?

Sex is NOT the only way you can get HPV.
It can be transmitted through birth to the
baby from the mother, and sometimes
through kissing if the warts are on the
lips.
If someone has ever had a wart anywhere,
they have HPV. That means yes, little kids
have HPV, and they're clearly NOT sexuall
active. Your doctor was telling the truth
to you...
As for FAMVIR, I don't know why they'd
prescribe that to you. Herpes and
HPV/Warts are not the same thing. Unless,
you do have Herpes and not HPV?

I don't have any warts, so it's not the
kind of HPV that involves warts (there are
2 kinds), and therefore I don't think it
could be transmitted through killing.
Also if it was transmitted by kissing it
wouldn't show up on a smear test, it would
show up as warts on my lips.
I definitely have HPV not herpes. I think
my doctors are just idiots. One told me
it's not sexually transmitted, and the
other said sex is the only way it is
transmitted. So has everything I have
read.

Well, I'm going to stick with what I've
been taught (I know there are two kinds -
there are actually more than that - I felt
that was a useless point to bring up).
However you caught it, you have it. Just
because warts don't manifest doesn't mean
you don't have the kind that causes them.
You may get lucky and never have a
breakout. However, even if you don't have
a break out, you can still give it to
someone else.
HPV can also cause cervical cancer IF you
have that particular strain. Only a
gynecologist will be able to tell.

It sounds like you need to do a little
more research about HPV ladydeadlock.
There are several strains of HPV out there
and Eiri's right, certain strains do cause
cervical cancer.
Another thing is that unless you have had
a colposcomy, your doctor could not have
determined that you have HPV. Your doctor
could determine that you have displacia
and have some cells that could become
cancerous from your normal pap, but the
actual diagnosis comes from a more indepth
analsis of the bad cells. I know this
because I was diagnosed with it several
months ago and have recently gone through
treatment and now I have received a clean
pap.
HPV can be treated, but becuase it is a
virus, it can never be cured. It can
become dormant in your body and can be
reactivated for no particular reason.
You can get HPV from sex, but as Eiri said
there are several other ways of
contracting it. You can get it from
kissing or oral sex. It is an STD, but
did you know that 70% of all females in
this country have HPV. It is a very
common virus that is treatable, but not
curable.
I think that you need to do some more
research before you give up on your
doctors. And yes they do want your money,
but they also want to help you. Try
typing HPV in google, and also look on
webmd for some answers. It will put your
mind at ease.
PM me if you have any specific questions -
like I said, I have recently gone through
this.

De nada!
It is easy to talk about once you have
gone through it yourself. I can
understand how some girls can get freaked
out and scared...I was...then I did my
research and talked to my doctor and then
things started to calm down and get
better.

I was diagnosed with HPV about a month
ago. It scaired the crap outta me. I was
with my guy for 8yrs and didnt understand
How I contracted it. Needless to say I did
and now I have warts. The strand with the
warts are 6 & 11. If u have warts its
concidered a "LOW RISK" strand. You HAVE
to get your regular paps to make sure
theres no cell changes. The more I learn
about this the more I see how truely
common it is. My doctor made me feel dirty
like its a "whores disease" and still
hasnt treated me with anything.( I hate
Doctors) Your body will automaticlly make
a ammunity to it but u'll always have a 2%
activity wich causes a breakouts in the
future(if u break out)and the chance to
spread it. It doesnt go away but the doc
did said the warts will go away on their
own in 12 to 18 months as your body builds
aummunity. THE BIGGEST THING IS TO QUIT
SMOKIN (if you smoke). Smoking lowers your
ammunity and causes your body to go SLOWWW
in healin or exastborate the disease(spead
it up to worse stages). Take vitimins and
quit whatever it is that may bring down
your ammune system. I've learned that up
to 80% women in the US has HPV weather
they know it or not. So dont be afraid.
Its common enough to have endless amounts
of information. Learn about it and you'll
see how truely common it is..... GOOD LUCK

You have gotten a lot of good information
on HPV here. It is very, very, very
common. Although, there was a time quite
recently, that HPV was not very well known
to the general population. Thanks to the
promotion of the vaccine that can prevent
some types of HPV, everyone sitting in
their living room watching tv in the
evening has learned about HPV.
It is sexually transmitted but, guess
what? There are no tests for men and men
spread it from woman to woman. You can
have HPV in your system for years before
it shows up - so you can be in a
monogomous relationship and still have
HPV.
While the higher risk strains can
cause cervical cancer, that isn't likely
if you are getting your years pap smears
and taking care of your health. Cervical
cancer takes years to develop. Most women
don't know this, but that is WHY we get
pap smears to detect cervical changes that
could be cancerous.
Get pap smears every year.
You might want to ask your doctor (you can
ALWAYS call his/her nurse anytime. FREE)
about the medication s/he prescribed for
you. In fact, I wonder why anyone would
take medication without first discussing
it with their doctor!
Good luck!

Why don't you ask your doc why he/she
prescribed you with that?
It's not really fair to not trust them but
not ever ask why they do it, perhaps they
have a perfectly good reason and you just
don't understand.
