How Many Women In the U.S. Will Have An Abortion? Posted: 09-06-07 05:54am
How many women in the world will? I mean
over their entire reproductive lifetimes,
from age say 15 to 45 (just an
approximation), how many women will have
at least one abortion during that time?
Please answer in percentages. Thanks.
The reason I ask this is that it seems to
me that some pro-life people think
abortion is:
1) rare
and
2) something that no one they know would
ever do, or have ever done.

Is this just a guess or do I get to look
up stats?
As a guess I would say half of all
reproductive age women will have an
abortion in their lifetime.

The actual statistic is at about half if I
recall correctly. 1 in 2 women, 5 in 10,
etc, will have an abortion in their
lifetime.

There are many myths and misconceptions
about who gets abortions, and why. The
fact is that the women who have abortions
come from all racial, ethnic,
socioeconomic, and religious backgrounds.
If current rates continue, it is estimated
that 35% of all women of reproductive age
in America today will have had an abortion
by the time they reach the age of 45.3

I used to think it was rare, but then
where I am from it is rare, but here I
living here in the continental US I don't
think it is rare and I know people who
have done it.

What makes you think it is rare around
where you live?
Did you know that 43% of American women
will have an abortion by the age of 45???
That is nearly 50% of the women you know
– 50% of the women standing here. And
every abortion involves more than one
person – the woman’s partner –
husband – boyfriend – best friend –
mom – sister – dad – aunt…..
Our patients are constantly AMAZED when we
tell them that 43% of women will have an
abortion in their lifetime.

Is it legal in PR? Wait...do they have
the same laws as the continental US?
I have no idea...

If you looked closely, you'd see the first
quote was from a pro-life site.

I think that's right. I posted similar
stats somewhere else and I seem to
remember they said about half.
They were from a pro choice site, if it
makes any difference. But it seems that
the two sides are pretty much in agreement
about this.
Focus on the family being obviously pro
life, and planned parenthood being
obviously pro choice.

Thank-you and you are welcome.
I think it's a very nice attribute of this
site that people are so polite and
appreciative of others.

Yes, abortion is legal in PR but being
legal or not won't affect the stats.

Nobody can assure that 43% of women will
have an abortion in their lifetime. That
is just a assumption. If birth control
become more effective, if more education
goes on and so on that number could
decrease to 10% for example. Abortion is
not like cancer. The only thing you can do
tell is that now 43% or whatever the
number is what we have now. Next year it
could be different.
And by the way hearing 43% are having an
abortion is quite horrifying news. What
is the message they want to say? That
because 43% women are having abortions
then abortion is a common thing that we
should follow and that I shouldn't feel
bad if I do? The higher the number of
abortions then the more shame for the
country. I pray my country don't ever get
to that level.

Yes, abortion is legal in PR but being

Well, if it were illegal it wouldn't be as
accurately reported...right?
Does PR have the same laws regarding
gestation timing and such as the
Continental US?
The whole "US Territory" thing is
confusing to me...
