Birth Control Question
Posted: 03-22-04 16:50pm

I went to my gynecologist around jan 9th to get birth control pills. I was prescribed ortho-tryclen-lo (28 pills) and I started those pills the sunday after my period (about 3 days after the doctor visit) I did pretty good with them and I got exactly halfway through and decided not to take them anymore so I stopped. I decided I wanted to get a different brand so she wrote me a new prescription. Before I started taking the new pills, I had a period exactly a month after the one in january and it lasted about 7 days (unusual for me) and was fairly light. Around the middle of february like the 22nd I got my period again I think so I started taking cyclessa. It had only been two weeks since I had gotten the period early that month. The period only lasted like two days (which is why I was doubting it as a period) and the second day was really heavy and that was it. I talked to a doctor about it and she said I was supposed to have finished the first pack of ortho-tryclen-lo but I never did. I had severe cramping around the 2nd week of cyclessa and was breakthrough bleeding almost everyday throughout the month. She said I wasn't necessarily protected. I got my period around the 2nd day of the last week pills of the pack. Am I supposed to get it during the last week pills for day 1 start? Or is that only for sunday start? Well this week my period has been so heavy. It's never been as heavy as it has been this week ever. I thought these were supposed to make it lighter. My question is that after this month and I start taking my active pills again (about 3 days) will I be protected? I forgot to ask my doctor if i'm protected now and if that was only just the first month since I threw myself off by not finishing my first pack of a different brand. Any input would help. Thanks.

Rolling Eyes use condoms as a precaution until you can check with a doctor or pharmacist that you will be safe.

It sounds like your body is just reaction to the changes with the hormones. The first few months your period can change consistency until your body gets into a rhythym with the hormone cycles. It sounds like your problems are because of stopping the first pack too soon. I would stay on the new pills and it should even out in the next month or so. I would probably guess you are not protected until you've been steady on one prescription for about a month.

Pills will make your period lighter if you take them correctly. Your body is so messed up right now it is no wonder why you are bleeding so much. You will not be fully protected for three months. That is three months of taking the pill every day at the same time every day. After two weeks to one month of taking the pill correctly you will be protected, but you will not be fully protected until after the third month. Also, your body will not be fully use to this new pill for three months. So, you may have another heavy period next month also. It just all depends. But, you are always suppose to give the pill a three months chance. If after that time the side effects are still there and annoying you, then you can talk to your doctor about switching brands. But, even when you switch brands, you have to finish the pack that you are on and then start the new pack after your period. But, I really hope you are using condoms right now as your hormones are going wacky. People get pregnant on the pill all of the time, especially when they do not use a back up method for at least the first month.
