FYI typing in all caps will cause outrage in some people.

I would say this is a great question for your doctor.

An abnormal pap smear WILL NOT hurt the baby. In fact, it won't do anything to the baby. Make a list of questions to ask your doctor.

A pap smear that is a 'little off' is nothing. They'll give you a more in depth pap smear (colposcopy) and test the skin cells of your cervix. Your doctor may give you pap smears every 3 months to check to make sure everything is alright throughout your pregnancy.

This is nothing to be alarmed about and nothing to be overly concerned over. Your pregnancy isn't going to be compromised.

The colposcopy is a test of the cells to see the degree of cervical cell changes. It will not harm the baby but if there is something you need to do to treat is you will have to wait untill after the birth because it can weaken the cervix.

i had the same thing when i was pregnant with my son, but they just did like 3 ultrasounds when i was pregnant . i had the colposcopy after he was born though, like 4 weeks postpartum. How come they are doing it while your still pregnant and not just wait until after the baby is born to do it?

Some doctors are different. Some will take a more aggressive approach, while others take a wait and see approach.

Any procedure they do they'll probably wait until after deliver though, not because it will weaken the cervix, but because it won't be serious enough to deal with during pregnancy.

A LEEP is a safe procedure and it does not weaken the cervix - except in rare instances. A LEEP only takes the top layers of skin cells. For a more in depth procedure, a doctor can do a cold knife cone biopsy that goes deeper into the cervix. Even then though, a doctor has to really botch it up to weaken your cervix.

It does. It is no biggie really but if you have a biopsy it hurts more. By the way it is COLPOSCOPY. A colonoscopy concerns an entirely different whole.

Hi
Not colonoscopy but colposcopy......I just took my daughter in this past week. The Dr. there suggested Mortin or a generic ibuprophen instead of Tylenol an hour before appointment. Said this would help with mild cramping during the procedure. No one told her this until after the procedure was completed.

She couldn't take ibuprofen. She is pregnant. Only tylenol.

As with any procedure, for kids in the future too, like to the dentist or to get shots. Always give some tylenol 1/2 hour in advance. It helps RIGHT AWAY when the pains come. Just a little FYI. Smile

No, no ibuprofen. I only take Motrin so making the change and taking tylenol is kinda a pain. Plus it can't be tylenol extra strength if you're in the 1st trimester.

I'd be pretty scared if I had an abnormal pap. It's strange the doc didn't tell you it wouldn't hurt the baby. But it seems like good news everyone here seems to agree the baby should be fine.

I thought that too. Then I re-read it a few times and think she meant she took Motrin until she found out she was preggo and it is a PIA to switch to tylenol.

Smile But, hey, I'm wrong about what I know - or think I know - all the time.

ETA: I'm a dork and the way I wrote it before sounded like I was being snarky. Which I'm not.

I never said it wasn't. I said I normally take motrin, before I knew I was pregnant. Now I'm taking tylenol and I don't think it works as well as motrin does for me.

Oh, I didn't know that. I've got awful headaches everyday and tylenol doesn't seem to help. Sad
