Is There a Law That Protects People With Mental Disorders Posted: 09-11-07 14:53pm
hi
i was diagnosed as a manic depressing, a
term that i have always been scared of. it
sounds so terrifying and unbelievable that
a human being can experience such high and
colourful heights, ideas, brilliant mind
vs. dark deep and cold holes when you are
terrified by everything around you and
when you only want to sleep until the end
of your life. unfortunately depression is
like a plague that settles into your soul
and mind and heart and wont even let you
sleep. it enjoys torturing people,
letting them wonder what is the purpose of
living when you feel like a piece of wood,
no feelings, everything is gray and
dimmed.
i have been living with it for 5 years,
two times i was hospitalized because of
manic episode.
my main concern is that i am 40 and my
parents took me to the hospital. is there
a way to protect US with mental disorders
from being taken to the hospital by
anyone, parents, boss

im sure that there are--you have to look
them up. If your parents have gaurdianship
that might be different. hang in there.
you can always tell them you dont want to
go and see what they say. they may just be
concerned and want the best for you. in
that case id just go to make them happy.

the point is that they do not ask me, they
drag me into the hospital where i am given
a medicine called HALDOL and tied to bed,
they wont listen to me. i only get
verbally agressive since they do not
listen to me, or when they are not right.
and what is worst is that they are ashamed
of me, scared to death that somebody might
have met in the hospital and that that
will ruin their reputation.
i work and function well, i am very social
and NORMAL (what is the definition of
NORMAL - be like everybody else?), the
point is, when you are different you do
not fit into the group, society, family.
my problem is that i am over sensitive,
cannot stand injustice and think that i
should cure all the troubles of this
planet
warmest regards

I know how you feel.
Normal I think is a very loose term.
Normal for one person is not normal for
another. That is just my opinion. I wish i
could cure the planet as well.
Do you think that if you had your own
place things would be better? I dont think
its right for someone to drag you to the
hospital regardles of wether its your
parents or not. Do you have a job? if so
id really look into my own place. or if
you already do ---i dont think you
mentioned it---maybe you could put down
some ground rules? and do look up the
laws. It can only protect you.
amaures, anyone, including your neighbors,
friends, or family can call health
services and have you picked up if they
feel you are a danger to yourself or to
others. It's the point at which they can
"keep you detained" that comes into
question. They cannot commit you without
your consent and I believe the longest
they can keep you at a mental health
facility is 24 hours against your will or
until they feel you aren't a threat to
yourself or anyone else. It sounds to me
that your parents are doing this for your
own protection, but if you feel the visits
to the hospital aren't warrented, you
should speak with your threapist, who
should be closely monitoring your
symptoms.

In PA they can detain you for 72 hours
after that they need to get a court order
to keep you longer. Generally they'll
keep you till your insurance says it won't
pay for it anymore...that's been my
experience.
