I just think this idea is silly. It seems
as though pro-lifers don't think a woman
who wants to abort knows what she's
doing.
The woman obviously knows where babies
come from, and she knows there is one
inside her, and she knows she is going to
stop it from forming. Why should you go
through the time and expense to get her to
look at it first?? It's like rubbing a
dog's nose in it's pee.

When a woman gets an abortion SHE ALWAYS
GETS AN ULTRASOUND ANYWAY!
They have to do this in order to
accurately and precisely date the
pregnancy.
The woman can look if she wants, noone is
going to say no.
I saw all 3 of my ultrasounds before I had
my abortions, all I did was ask.

Is that a relatively new phenomenon? That
didn't happen to me.

I don't think it is 'new'. I think it
depends on the clinic used.

you work in an abortion clinic right? then
you should know that not all women have to
get a u/s before they have an abortion

I didn't have an u/s before my abortion.
To my knowledge, it is not common
procedure to have one up here but maybe
that's because of our public system.
Personally, I think it's unnecessary
unless there's an uncertainty over
gestational age. As for women looking at
them, if the woman wants to, she should be
able to but she should not be forced to.

You HAVE to get an ultrasound. Call it
forced if you like, but the doctor has to
know how big the embryo/fetus is!!
However, a woman does NOT have to LOOK at
the ultrasound.

I personally think - and I think Carifairy
would agree - that an ultrasound should be
mandatory to determine the size of the
embryo/fetus. You don't need to look at
it, but I wouldn't want a doctor digging
around down there without knowing how big
the thing was that he was removing!

The size is determined when the doctor
asks "When was your last period?"
This is exactly the same question your
obgyn asks when you are pregnant and
keeping the baby, and you are having your
first prenatal visit. Everything is
calculated from your answer, from your due
date to how far along you are at that
moment.

Sorry, but I've never heard of a doctor
going by the patient's word alone - from
what I know, ultrasounds are always
performed. Doctors don't just ram a vacuum
into the patient and hope for the best -
as many others have said, an u/s needs to
be done so the doctor knows what he's
dealing with. Also, is u/s not also used
so the doctor can make sure he's gotten
all the fetal tissue out? Someone correct
me if I'm wrong, but if fetal tissue is
left behind, it can cause a fatal
infection.
Also, some women may have what they think
are periods during early pregnancy (hell,
some women bleed for their entire
pregnancy), and abortions based solely on
what the patient says could end up being
useless at the least and dangerous at the
worst. A woman who thinks she's one month
gone might be three and a half months
gone, for all she knows. She doesn't need
to see the ultrasound, but as a lot of
other people have already said, the doctor
performing the surgery needs to know what
the hell he's doing. That would be like
removing a brain tumor without having an
MRI done first - would you trust a doctor
to root around in your head with a drill
and a knife if he didn't know where to
look for the offending growth??
I know abortions aren't quite as delicate
as brain surgeries, but I think most will
understand what I'm getting at.

yes but as said by other posters on here
they do NOT always give a u/s

I hadn't read the other posts yet when I
made mine, as I assumed it was a simple
common safety procedure to see exactly how
big the embryo/fetus was before removing
it.
Personally if I was getting an abortion
I'd demand an ultrasound for just those
reasons: safety. I have no desire to look
at it, but I sure as hell want my doctor
to know how big it is.

I have no idea when my last periods are
usually. Yeah, I could count backwards in
my pill packs, but I'm going to be on depo
soon. As of right this moment, if I was
raped and then chose abortion because the
MAP failed, I would not know
when my last period was.

Well, I'm not really asking about the need
to perform one for the doctor's sake. I
didn't know they did that, actually. But I
mean when pro-life groups are rallying
around the idea of making women look at an
ultrasound, get special 'counseling', and
wait 24 hours to think about it before
they are allowed to abort.
