Blood Test Confirms "old" Strain of Mononucleosis, So Am I? Posted: 09-18-07 22:01pm
I am a mother of 3, and have not been kissing
any strangers lately. I have been sick
for a week now. Initial symptoms were
headache, fever, chills, tiredness, sore
throat, swollen glands. Dr. suspected mono
or strep. The strep test came back
negative. Blood test showed "old" strain
of mono, but nurse who gave me the results
said that was not what is wrong now.
Could she be mistaken and this is actually
an outbreak or is something else causing
my illness? TIA.

The exact same thing happened to me. About
three months ago, I had a mono test. The
nurse told me that the first one that only
took a few hours was positive and the one
that came back a week later showed that I
had had mono before. However, after six
weeks with no improvement, I went to the
doctor, who showed me the results and
which clearly showed a severe case of
acute mono. It is quite possible that the
nurse was wrong. You really need to know
because if you have it and don't rest, it
will get worse. I would know, I've had
severe symptoms for three months . I hope you don't
have it, especially as a mother of three!
If your symptoms don't impove, ask you
doctor to review and explain your results.

This is very similar to my situation. My
test came back and said I had previously
had mono but not presently. However, I do
not remember ever having mono, which seems
like something I, or my mother, would
remember.
Could the doctors be confusing an old
strain with a present one by ANY chance?
Keep us posted on what happens.

It can keep coming back for a long time.
Stress and lack of rest makes it worse.
Allergies are also stressors.
