Help! Re: Yasmin & Missed Period/weird Period
Posted: 03-24-04 22:58pm

Hi, just joined to ask this question. There seems to be conflicting information out there on yasmin.
A little background: I have been very busy, and not feeling like being on the pill because I broke up with my bf 3 weeks ago. But I half heartedly have been taking the pill, but several hours late many nights. Usually I take it at 6pm, but last week I took it often as late as 2am. Well here's my question:
is the last week a placaebo or not? I thought it was just a "sugar pill" so I decided to skip it this month.

I usually get my . By monday night. I did get a bit of a . On tuesday morning, but it went away and it's just been spotting, not a normal period. Now I feel all puffy and irritated and heavy. Is this because of my erratic use of the pill last week? Is it because I skipped the first 3 days of my "sugar pill?" (i started taking it again yesterday because I thought maybe that was the problem.)

i guess i'm worried about pregnancy. I don't think I have even had sex with my bf in 3 weeks + and when I did, I used the pill flawlessly, so I doubt that's the cause, but just wondering, does anyone have this kind of mystery period when they're pregnant, or is it probably related to my bc pill misuse? Thanks in advance.

Oh and just to clarify, I havent been sexually active since breaking up 3 weeks ago, so if I am pregnant (i really don't feel pregnant I feel pmsy) then I would have gotten pregnant 3+ weeks ago.

Hey there. Smile i'm guessing that you're feeling strange and that your period is out of wack due to skipping the "placebo" pills. I decided to skip the green placebo pills in my pack in order to "skip" my period this month. Evidently this method doesn't work for everyone, and unfortunately it didn't work for me either. Lol so now i've had a longer than usual period paired with the worst case of pms and cramping.

Last week when my period magically appeared I called planned parenthood and the clinician told me to continue taking my pills regularly and things will sort themselves out. I recommend speaking to your doctor if you want to go off the pill completely.

Thanks for the reply, are you also on yasmin 28?

When you skipped your placebo did you start on a new month of pills?

Cos I havent, I just havent been taking anything, which I think ought to ensure a period.

Does anyone out there know if the placebo pills are somehow required to cause a period? That just doesnt make sense to me. Has taking yasmin some how made my body forget how to menstrate without the help of chemicals? If so, that means those are not sugar pills at all.

It is so confusing.

But yes, I am going to take the pills as directed, started yesterday. I am so bloated and crampy it sucks.

And I am on weight watchers, and my weigh in is tomorrow, which double sucks because all this water retention and stuff is going to make me heavier than I would have been if i'd had a normal period!

Nope, I take ortho tricyclen lo. Yes, when I skipped my placebo pills I started a new pack of pills and that's what screwed me up.... Skipping your pill altogether probably screws your cycle up too.

I know in order for me to get my period regularly, I have to take the placebos. I'm assuming the placebo pills allow your hormonal levels to go where they need to be, thus allowing your period to come. Yasmin may not work the same way though... Doesn't yasmin have the same amount of hormones in each pill?

I feel your pain though. I'm so bloated I look pregnant. Wink

See, these are the question I need answers to!!!
I need to know, is there any amt of hormones in the last week's pills or are they really just reminders?

Because if they are just reminder pills, then they should have no effect on my period whatsoever.

I thought this forum was where the harvard doctorlings come to help the public!

I suppose if the last week is just a placebo then the weird period must be caused by my erratic usage of the pills last week. But it isnt' enough to speculate, I want definitive answers! Arg!

Then maybe you should pick up the phone and call your doctor or you could open up your internet browser and check out yasmin's web site to see if it has the answers you need so desperately. Most of the people here aren't doctors. They're just regular people trying to help. I'm surprised you're even taking a method of birth control which you know very little about.

If there is anyone who can help, it would be much appreciated, someone who is on yasmin, and who knows the answers to my questions!

And in case anyone cares, I haven't got any insurance so I pay out of pocket to see a naturapathic practitioner who prescribed yasmin for me when I asked for it. I have called their offices yet because I am trying to save money (phone consultations cost $ too) so, that's why i'm here, not like I should have to justify why I am asking a question here, and not like I should be reprimanded for not knowing exactly how my pill works. I thought I knew, you see, but now I am not sure. Seems like an honest mistake, which I am now trying to correct. Mkay!?

So, I don't need a doctorling, but I do need info specific to yasmin, not other pills, because what I understand about yasmin is, it's very different than other pills.

Thanks again

Your the one with the attitude and I merely responded to it. People can only offer you suggestions based on what they know and what you tell them. If you want solid answers from a doctor, this probably isn't the place to be. I'd at least be thankful someone took the time to try to answer my question, even if they couldn't give a definitive answer. Smile

The placebo pills are not required to start a period. They are just sugar pills, and contain no hormones. It really doesn't matter if you take them or not, just so long as you don't go more than 7 days without being on the active pills with hormones in them.

Your really light period and now feeling all puffy is probably from the erratic pill use. Have you been on the pill for a long time? I've heard that that can sometimes cause weird things to happen from time to time. Or have you just started on the pill? 'cause I know that can royally mess you up for a while!

If you're at all worried that you might be pregnant, take a test to put your mind at ease. You said you used the pill flawlessly when you were with your bf, so you're probably not preg, but it could still happen...I've heard that getting preg can cause "implantation bleeding" that looks like spotting...

"A 24/4-Day Design: YAZ has a 24/4-day dosing schedule, meaning that with YAZ birth control, you take active (hormone) pills for 24 days and inactive (sugar or placebo) pills for four days. Taking active pills for three additional days, versus the traditional 21/7-day regimen, helps your hormone levels stay even. To learn more about what three additional days of birth control with 24 active pills may mean for you, please consult your healthcare professional for pill information." hope this helps!
