Orange And Yellow Oily Diarrhea Posted: 01-30-07 07:37am
I had oily orange diarrhea a couple of
months ago. It was mid morning and then
it stopped at lunch time. I thought it
was really weird and asked a close friend
about it but they had never heard of it
either. Since it didn't even last a day
I figured that it was just a freak bodily
function and I pretty much forgot about it
until today. I woke up this morning and
found that it was back! Only this time
it wasn't just orange. It started out
orange and now it's yellow. I have not
had anything out of the ordinary to eat.
No fish and no diet or oil filled foods.
For dinner I had chicken with rice and
corn and I didn't even add any butter to
it! The only good thing I can say about
it is that I can somewhat control it so
that it will wait till I go to the
bathroom but thank god I don't have to go
to work today. I have been looking
online for a 'cure' but I can't seem to
find one. Can anyone help me?

Thanks a lot for the post, its been very

Crazy Orange Discharge Posted: 06-10-07 22:54pm
I've eaten Escolar (White Tuna etc...)
many, many, many times along with
countless other types of sushi (or sashimi
as I like it best) but a funny thing
happened to me last week...I too, for the
first time, experienced the joy of dealing
with the same thing we are all discussing
now. I can't explain why this has
happened to me now, completely out of the
blue. It's quite a coincidence that the
consumption of a certain type of fish has
"caused" these symptoms, but I hope it's
as simple as it seems. I'm not going to
quit eating the sushi that I love so much
anytime soon but I might buy some Depends
or something just in case the evil, oily,
orange monster decides to visit my
household again.

Re: Oily Bowel Movement Posted: 06-16-07 21:00pm
Oh my goodness! I've been worried to death
all day! I have been eating orange roughy
that I bought from Ralph's too!!! It must
be that then. I'm a semi-vegetarian and
the only meat I eat is fish. I've been
buying it from Ralph's because it was on
sale, easy and fast to cook. I had it
twice this past week and noticed it
started with LOTS of gas. Little did I
know with the gas, there was oil seeping.
I didn't know until I went to the bathroom
and saw it in my underwear. Then I looked
in the toilet and thought oh my gosh I
have some sort of parasite or something! I
googled and found this site and noticed
all the references to whitefish and
thought ok, it's what I ate. This just
might make me a full blown vegetarian with
no fish in my diet at all. This is not
cool man, I was in Target shopping and I
passed gas (embarrassing! Cuz I couldn't
help it) and I felt that there was an oily
discharge. I had to drop everything and
run to my truck and hightail it home. This
is awful! How long til it goes away?

Orange Oil Drops Due to Escolar Fish Posted: 06-19-07 11:27am
Wikipedia.com has a very good article on
"escolar" fish and I attached it below.
It states that Escolar is different than
" "white tuna", "butterfish", "oilfish"
and "Hawaiian butter fish" and people
commonly make that mistake. I had escolar
and had diarhhea and then the next day I
had regular solid poop but with orange oil
drops. My stomach cramped up and feels
naustious all day. I hope this goes away
soon. In wikipedia, they said Japan
banned this fish because they think it is
toxic. From my diarhhea experience, I
agree that it is toxic.
WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE ON ESCOLAR BELOW:
The escolar, Lepidocybium flavobrunneum,
is a snake mackerel, the only species in
the genus Lepidocybium. It is found in
deep (200–885 m) tropical and temperate
waters around the world.
The escolar is dark brown in colour,
growing darker with age until it is quite
black. It is a fast-swimming fish with a
prominent lateral keel and multiple
finlets. It grows up to 2 m in length.
Like its relative the oilfish, Ruvettus
pretiosus, the escolar is consumed in
several European and Asian countries, as
well as in the USA. Neither fish
metabolises the wax esters (Gempylotoxin)
naturally found in their diet, which
causes an oil content in the muscle meat
of the fish amounting to 18–21%. These
wax esters may rapidly cause
gastrointestinal symptoms following
consumption; however, these effects are
usually short lived.
The gastrointestinal symptoms, called
"keriorrhoea", caused by these wax esters
may include oily orange diarrhea,
discharge, or leakage from the rectum that
may smell of mineral oil. The discharge
can stain clothing and occur without
warning 30 minutes to 36 hours after
consuming the fish. The oil may pool in
the rectum and cause frequent urges for
bowel movements due to its lubricant
qualities and may be accidentally
discharged by the passing of gas. Symptoms
may occur over a period of one or more
days. Other symptoms may include stomach
cramps, loose bowel movements, diarrhea,
headaches, nausea, and vomiting.
To minimize the risk of symptoms, strict
control of portion size is recommended.
Portions should be no greater than 6
ounces.
For these reasons, escolar has been banned
from consumption in Japan since 1977, as
the Japanese government considers it
toxic. In the United States, the U.S. Food
and Drug Administration, after receiving
complaints about diarrhea associated with
escolar consumption, issued a bulletin
recommending against import of the fish in
the early 1990s. However, the FDA backed
away from this recommendation and withdrew
the bulletin several years later after
deciding the fish was nontoxic and
nonlethal.
Escolar is sometimes consumed raw as sushi
or sashimi. It is also sold misleadingly
as "white tuna", "butterfish", "oilfish"
and "Hawaiian butter fish"; in Hawaii and
Fiji, it is known as walu.

Re: Orange Oil Drops Due to Escolar Fish Posted: 06-19-07 14:43pm
Thanks for that articale it explains alot!
I talked to my doctor and he did explain
somethign similar along those lines. It
does go away in 2-5 days (depends on your
own digestion system). I'm feeling better
and I'm kind of scared of whitefish in
general, lol. My doc said that the oily
stools are a toxic reaction to the body's
inability to digest and break down the wax
esters. In humans, wax esters are
indigestible and thus accumulate in the
rectum causing oily diarrhoea
(keriorrhoea), which is what rapidly
causes gastrointestinal symptoms after
eating it but the symptoms are often not
very severe, are not life threatening and
they pass.
It might not have been orange roughy that
we ate. I read that they are "relabeling"
alot of fish to be able to seel them.
Careful what you buy. This will pass and
you will be ok.

Cashews! Whew! Posted: 06-23-07 20:00pm
I felt so sick all of a sudden today and
then started having the problem discussed
here, the orange oily bowel movement!! I
went on a search and thank goodness for
this forum! I was ready to run to the ER!
Now
I see 3 or 4 of you have said Cashews
caused the problem for you, and sure
enough, I have been eating them for about
3 days. I am a strict vegetarian also, and
eat them for the protein. Ironically, I
always eat them, but buy a certain brand.
I purchased a different brand this time
and had this problem for the first time
after eating this particular kind. Odd...
but thank you all for not being ashamed to
post about this! It certainly relieved me
of my anxiety about it!

Oily Orange Diahrrea Posted: 06-29-07 22:31pm
okay, so I just woke up and freaked out
when I saw this orange oily liquid
discharging from me. I'm so happy I found
this site. I've been living in Taiwan,
and for the first time yesterday I ate a
delicious catfish at a local restaurant.
Good to know I'm not alone. I hope it
leaves soon though...its so annoying I
don't know whether to sit or stand...

Oily Orange Anal Leakage - How Disgusting. Posted: 07-12-07 11:16am
so needless to say, i am a victim of this
nasty nasty thing... happend last night
when i had a bowel movement, shortly after
whenever i 'farted' it would come out with
orange... unfortunately getting all over
my undergarments, this morning i woke up,
thinking ok whatever it was just the
burger king i ate yesteday ( which i
thought would be OK because i usually eat
very healthy ), but it happened again...
so i called my mother who advised me to
eat fiber to clean out the oily substance
from my system, so i start eating
cashews... stumble upon this site... and
well, i have stopped eating cashews.. i
guess i was just overloading my body with
oil... GROSS!!
won't be eating burger king for a long
long long time.
I have been having uncontrollable oily
bright orange diarrhea for a night, I
haven't been eating anything weird and I
have no other symptoms, any suggestions?

A friend of mine took bael pills
when she had diarrhea…I think you need
to try it too. it is a herbal product so
don’t worry you won’t have any side
effect.

Oily Diarrhea Posted: 08-09-07 16:35pm
I'm so thankful that it was posted that
some types of fish will cause this to
happen. I had a very unpleasant
experience at work today. I had no clue
what was happening. Tonight I did a
search and found a posting related to
fish. caca...that is what I ate yesterday
- two times as leftovers - butterfish!!!!
I hope I did not ruin my skirt today.
I too am suffering from this strange
malady...I don't eat fish, no oelestra and
the only change AT ALL in diet has been
the addition of the diet supressant Alli
which I believe works with fat. This
concerns me if I am suppressing too much
fat since I really don't eat much fat in
my diet anyway...just unexplained weight
gain that I needed help with.
Anyone ever hear of diet suppressants
being linked to this malady?
Thanks

hello, I just wanted to throw in another
case of cashew induced oily discharge!
I'm currently having this problem (too
much information?), and my dinner last
night was a big bowl of fried rice with
cashews, plus i'd been eating handfuls of
salted cashews from time to time over the
last two days.
So, if anyone is experiencing this problem
and thinking "but I haven't eaten any
fish", bear cashews in mind.
Oh, and also, someone mentioned that they
had this problem after eating fried chicken. well,
the night before last, I pigged out on kfc
(healthy, huh?), so for all I know, that
may have contributed.
Not only that, but the night before I ate
some kind of fish. It was a pale fish
though, not orange.
Given everything i've eaten over the last
three nights, I hope i'm not leaking for
the next three weeks!

How long did it last for you?

this discharge also happened to me several

Everyone keeps talking about this fish but
I had the same thing and symptoms happen
to me. I remember eating my boyfriends
dads cooking and they are vietnamese.
There was fish in it but I have no idea
what kind it was. His parents don't speak
English. But we also went to a Viet.
retaurant and ate but I just had fried
ramen with vegtables and that is when i
started having stomach aches. I had the
fish the night before. IT's been like 4
days and I am still having the discharge.
Could it be more serious?
I was so nervous to ask anyone else to
explain what might be wrong with me. As
all of us quite know it is a pretty
embarassing discussion.

After I stopped hyperventilating with fear
over what appeared in the commode this
morning I finally googled the "oily orange
stool" keywords and found this thread!
THANK YOU ALL for sharing your experience
and knowlege. Yesterday I had leftover
Kentucky Fried Chicken for lunch, munched
on cashews in the afternoon while I
prepared a huge orange roughy filet for
dinner, and then sat wondering why I was
so bloated and uncomfortable! When the
vile orange oil appeared this am, I
thought for sure I had pancreatitis and
was going to die. Soon.
Thank you one and all for coming out of
the (water) closet on this one...
No more orange roughy for me, while I'm
pretty sure this is a rather harmless side
effect from the fish, it just isnt worth
the after effects!

Thank You Sooooo Much!!!!!! Posted: 09-08-07 01:10am
ROFLOL!!! Ok, I was petrified at the idea
of sharing my orange oily poop story with
ANYONE!! I even postponed an evening with
my boyfriend because I didn't want him to
know that I might have some deathly
disease!! I passed it off as food
poisoning because I have never in my life
heard of oil coming out in addition to
yellow diarreah!! I was already planning
on going to the doctor if this didn't go
away in the next two days. I was weirded
out because I have NO pains, no nausea,
and no bloating. The only thing is creepy
oil, orange creepy oil!! YUK!! This was
unfortunately the cause of eating Orange
Roughy Fish. I discovered it for the
first time a few weeks ago, cooked it, ate
it, loved it, and was fine. This time I
made it twice in one week. I ate it, and
was fine. The second time I cooked it was
three days after I bought it, so I figured
it went bad and that's what was causing
the diarreah, but when the oil started
leakin, I freaked out! I am
soooooooooooooo glad I found this site. I
was searching under oil diarreah, yellow
diarreah, just about everything till I
looked under "oil in my poop" LOL go
figure. anyway, there should definitely
be a label on orange fish, "may cause
orange oil poop!" That stuff was AWESOME,
but I will never ever ever eat it again,
it's not worth it!!!!!!!
