First Time Getting Depo and Scared of Weight Gain Posted: 09-20-07 22:26pm
Alright, so I'm going to get my injection
pretty soon here... I know a girl who was
apparently my size several years ago, and
now she is fat, to be blunt! Not
pleasantly plump... FAT.
I am small. I have always been small. It
is part of my identity! I am "Tiny Tyna!"
I am seriously worried about possible
weight gain, because I'm concerned I may
develop an eating disorder such as
anorexia trying to control my weight if I
gain any. I already don't eat a ton of
food at meals unless it's pasta. I don't
count calories. I don't want to become a
girl who does.
So I'm scared of weight gain. I haven't
gained any weight on Ortho-lo, and I
didn't gain any weight when I took regular
Ortho as a teen, so I hope I'm safe.
Secondly, the girl I talked to had it
injected in her butt!! Needles don't
frighten me and an injection in my bum is
just like an injection anywhere else. But
is there after-shot soreness, like tetanus
shots? I'm not looking forward to a sore
bum!
What about emotional changes? This is my
last year of college and I really need to
be in top form. Is depo going to change me
into a depressed pscyho!? It lasts for
three months and that's the rest of the
semester X( I do not need that.
Lastly, she said everyone she knows who
took it spotted for a YEAR. O.o Aaahg!
Again, I have had NO spotting on pills, so
I'm hoping luck...

Most every woman does gain weight on DEPO,
and irregular bleeding is common.
I would personally not recommend depo,
because once you get it, it takes upwards
of 6-8 months for the effects to minimize.

I LOVED the depo. I don't know about the
weight gain I had just had a baby when I
got on. I changed to a pill about 2 years
later because of ins. but got pregnant
with my son after the change (yeah pill
didn't work). Then I went back on after
having my son. I had to change about 3
years later because it was basically
telling my body I was prego but I wasnt'
so the only way to make it stop was to get
off. I have been off for a little over a
year and have had nothing but trouble with
other BC's I go back in next month for my
check up and am begging him to let me back
on the shot. I didn't have much spotting
but when I did it was very light and only
lasted a couple days. And they don't
inject your butt, they put it in you upper
buttox (like right below your lower back,
if you have low rise jeans on they will
just pull the waist down a little to do
it) or your upper arm. It was sore for a
day or so but not bad. I loved it!!
Hopefully I'll be back on soon! Either
that or my hubby better decide it's time
for another one soon cause I can't take
this other crap I've had! Hope it goes
well for you, BC works different in
everyone you have to try to know!

I had to switch to pop's and terrified of
weight gain too... especially because I
gained 20 lbs on Mirena (progesterone)
but it seems like my only remaining
option....
I'm just praying for the best (and taking
a class that forces me to exercize every
day!)

for about a year. im 5'6" everyone tells
me im skinny.

a period
at all. so i dont think you should worry.

I gained about ten pounds on the shot.
Mostly around my belly. I had a flat
stomach until I got on the shot But it
was great, no periods, I didnt notice
anything different. But I decided to go
off it because it creates bone loss in
women who use for 2 years non-stop or
more. I was on it for 4 years. Last shot
was in Nov and in January I bled for 30
days straight, had three periods on one
month and the weight stayed. I had
horrible mood swings and bouts of
depression. I got on the pill- Necon 777-
and I love it. My emotions have stabled.
Your but is sore for a day or so. Its
like you have a big bruise. Maybe about
the size of your hand. Its not too bad
though. Try it and see if it works for
you.

well i was on depo for about a year. I
loved not having periods. It was great.
I did spot though. Which can be as
annoying as a period becuase at times it
wasnt heavy enough to wear anything but
than bam it would be.. so annoying. I also
gained weight on Depo. I had to watch
every little thing i ate. I gained
probably 5-8 pounds on depo. Than lost it
when i got off it. And now I have
wonderfully gained it back.. not because
of b.c but still You can get the
shot in your bum or your arm. I have had
both. The bum actually hurts less. But i
guess everyone is diffrent. It took me
almost 4 months after stopping depo to
actually get a period. So i guess it all
depends on what is important to you.
pros... no real long period, only one shot
every three months, it works well.
cons.... spotting, weight gain, no period
after stopping, can take a year to
conceive after stopping it.
me.. i wouldnt recommend it.

If you very afraid of the shot, have you
considered an IUD?
There are both hormonal and non hormonal
methods, and they are as easy to maintain
as the shot is...even easier..

I used Mirena for 18 months, before I
switched to paragard.
I never gained weight, BUT I exercise at
least an hour everyday, which is
technically what are supposed to do
anyway. I stayed the same weight, but I am
very very careful with calorie intake and
exercise.

Yeah- I am a dancer so I stayed pretty
active that whole time, but what are you
gonna do? It doesn't happen to most
people, I don't think.
I know it made me more hungry, looking
back on it, and since I had such awful
cramps I probably did more sitting on my
butt than usual!
