Yasmin And Blood Clots
Posted: 09-23-07 15:43pm

I was on another forum and someone there was asking about different types of bc pills and one of the people there said not to take Yasmin because you'll have a higher risk of getting blood clots.

What do you all think of this? Is this true? I did hear about this when it comes to Diane 35 but not the Yasmin.

The reason I ask is because I'm on Yasmin right now(my third month) and I'm wondering if I should stop it because of this.

Thank you.

Yasmin Contains Diuretic
Posted: 09-23-07 15:52pm

I'm currently taking the oc, Yasmin. When my doctor prescribed it, he mentioned that it contains a mild diuretic. He said that it's the only oc on the market right now containing a diuretic.

I have no idea about the blood clotting. I had not heard that before, but since it contains a diuretic ... it kinda makes sense.

Do diuretics increase your risk of blood clots? I've never heard of that before.

It's not something you really need to worry about unless you have a condition that puts you in a high risk for blood clots, stroke, that type of thing.

i had a pulmonary embolism- was taking yasmin
Posted: 02-18-08 22:07pm

i was on yasmin and started having cramps in my feet and legs. i thought it was due to vitamin deficiency or dehydration but it turns out i may have been throwing blood clots and disolving them without any other major symptoms. i started having chest pains one evening and went to the emergency room the next morning. i acutally had a pulmonary embolism and was hospitalized for 5 days, was on coumadin for the next 8 months and had to have a series of blood test and appointments along with a lot of hard work to restore my health. i had a test to see if i have a genetic disorder/pre-disposition to clotting and i don't. i was 33 years old at the time of the incident, non-smoker, otherwise healthy. the only explanation they could provide was a possible link to yasmin. there are warnings regarding an increased risk of developing blood clots on the packaging but i didn't think anything of it since my obgyn prescribed it. i wish i knew then what i know now- i would have never started taking oc's. please research before taking any medications and understand the possible side effects.

I too was hospitalized for severe clotting in both my legs (DVT) and lungs (PE) after only 3 months on Yasmin and having no other risk factors. I have been doing a bit of internet research and I keep running across this same story over and over. I will be giving myself shots of Lovenox in the stomach for at least another week (beginning last week when I was hospitalized) and will be taking Coumadin for about six months. I would strongly suggest not trying this pill if any others have already worked for you in the past.

You'll run into the same story if you search for ANY hormonal birth control in relation to blood clots. They ALL carry the same risk. The patch has a slightly higher risk than other forms.

Your doc should tell you this when you are prescribed birth control!!

If you experience ANY of these symptoms, tell your doc immediately:

ACHES warning signs:

If you have any of these warning signs well on birth control, get to a doctor asap. Especially the leg pain one (that's what my doc said) These are signs of blood clots and stroke.

# Abdominal pain
# Chest pain (also shortness of breath)
# Headaches (especially those that are new, severe, or associated with persistent dizziness, difficulty speaking, fainting, numbness or weakness in extremities
# Eye problems (blurred vision or loss of vision)
# Severe leg pain (and/or redness and swelling in the calf or thigh)

If you develop any of the ACHES side effects or jaundice (a yellowing of the eyes or skin) while on BCPs, call your doctor right away. If you need emergency medical attention, call the hospital. If you are out of town, contact a local health provider or go to a hospital emergency room.
