I had my hernia surgery
yesterday (Tues 18 Dec 2007) at the Royal
Free Hospital. There were some delays in
getting through the operations, so mine
was later than expected, but the surgery
went well and I am now recovering at home.
There was some pain at first that was hard
to bear, but painkillers helped.
I am not eating much yet, but drinking
okay and urinating frequently without
problems.
I am a bit worried about being constipated
because of the painkillers, so I have to
be careful to eat roughage food like fruit
and not take too many
painkillers.
Hi
Glad to hear you are home and doing OK.
Did the doctor use mesh on your hernia
repair? You mentioned the pain after
surgery was hard to bear please keep an
eye on this. This happened to me after my
hernia surgery, it's a year later and I am
still suffering with a lot pain (nerve
damage).
I am not trying to scare you. I really
don't want to see anymore people suffer
from bad hernia operations.
Drink plenty of water also apple cider can
help with constipation.
Happy Holidays and take it easy.

Hi davidak, I did get constipated. But
they gave me some tablets to take for that
which helped a lot. If you haven't got
anything like that get down to the chemist
for some, There very very cheap to buy.
(You should send someone else down to get
them) Got to take it easy old boy Am only joking
about the old of course
You well be pain free with in a day are
so. I was lucky and didn't feel that much
pain at all. Its been over 3 weeks now for
me and am fighting fight again. Still
taking it easy. I stayed at my parents
place for 5 days after the op tho. You
well be good in a few days mate.
It was the swelling that got me. Wasn't
expecting all that but its all gone back
to kinder normal lol
If I can help any with advise then please
just ask away.

Yes, it was the mesh they used to repair.
I am taking the pain killing tablets, but
I think they are making me constipated. A
friend of mine who is a nurse is visiting
me tomorrow and will probably be able to
suggest the best thing to take to things
moving again. At the moment I am just
eating fruit, cereal and biscuits. Very
little overall, as I am worried about not
being able to move the bowels.

I know it's only been a day since your
operation but please pay attention to your
body and the pain signals that are being
sent. If you do a a search about hernia
meshes the problems people are facing are
unreal.
I hope and pray you do not have suffer
like many of us are, I hope you will be
feeling better soon.
The best thing to do is rest.
bluey
Are you still feeling pain since your
repair?
Happy Holidays to you both
Again I want to say I am not trying to
scare anyone I am responding from my own
experience from hernia repairs.

davidak, When I had mine done just over 3
weeks ago now the hospital gave me two
lots of pain killers and one of them was
the cocodermol<---- spelt wrong.
But it was them that made me constipated
so I just took the other lot that they
gave me which was ibuprofen.

The good news is that I am not constipated
any more. I moved my bowels twice today
already with normal stools coming out.
Also much less pain from the surgery, and
I did not take any painkillers today. I
have not eaten much yet, so I should make
myself a dinner soon, as I don't want to
get ill. My weight is already down 3 kg
from what it was the night before surgery.

I wouldn't worry about losing weight, I
didn't eat that much for the fist couple
of days but because I haven't been doing
anything I put a little bit on. But then I
only even now weigh 9 stone so its not
going to hurt me any.
Have you got anyone looking after you?

I agree with bluey about the weight loss
it is very normal to lose weight after an
operation. Glad things are moving for you,
being constipated after surgery really
adds to the problem.
Get your rest

Bluey, I did my shopping before the
operation. It is easy now to do it online,
such as using Ocado and Sainsbury's. And
with Ocado, they even carry the bags in to
wherever you want them. As I live in a
flat with stairs from the front door to
the main part of the flat, the Ocado
deliverer took my bags upstairs for me.
This is all so much easier now than the
old way of shopping, going to the shops
and having to carry heavy bags home on the
bus. Since getting a hernia I am so glad
that online food deliveries can be
ordered, so I am stocked up well with food
for a while.
Cooking is okay, I am doing things that do
not require too much effort. My appetite
is returning, I had breakfast and lunch
today and will have dinner soon. I also
went out for a short walk this morning.
Mostly I am still taking it easy and
either checking and writing email, or
going on forums and other websites, but
not for too long. And watching TV or
reading.
So when did you return to work, Bluey,
assuming you did? I read that 2 weeks off
is usual for people in office jobs. But my
GP said I should not do any heavy lifting
for 12 weeks and on my income protection
insurance claim form, he put down that I
could be off work for 12 weeks. I do not
think it will take that long to recover
enough to go to work, but it may well be
more than 2 weeks. And if the insurance
pays out for several weeks, that certainly
helps (as I do not get any sick pay where
I work, the main drawback of being a
temporary agency worker).

I am feeling better every day, the healing
is going well, not so much pain when I
cough now.
The bruising though is different, the
bruise on my hand is getting better, but
not gone yet, but bruising has now
appeared on my penis. I read that this is
normal, but quite disconcerting to see it
this morning when I washed myself.
I do still get some twinges of pain when
standing up, getting out of bed or leaning
forward.
These things take time to heal, at least I
can relax at home, although today I went
out to a friend's house a short distance
away (went by bus) and that was good, a
nice get-together with a group of friends.
The hostess is a nurse and when she
visited me on Thursday she said that the
people who just sit around doing nothing
at home after surgery take longer to
recover, and she encouraged me to get out
and go for short walks, as did my
girlfriend.
I will be glad when this is all over, and
I suspect that the final week before I go
back to work, when I am pretty much
healed, will be the best. Less pain and I
can get to doing some projects at home I
have been wanting to do for ages, on my
computer (nothing that involves heavy
lifting).

WOW! David your doing very well in deed.
Going out and catching a bus all ready is
good. Every one that I come into contact
with tells me to do absolutely nothing at
all. Well I have been doing some stuff
now. To do nothing all the time just gets
a bit much. I was told to rest up for 6
weeks. So thats 2 weeks moor as from
crimbo day. yea the onlineshopping is a
good thing. If it wasn't for my mum I
would of done the same thing But my mum
being what she is likes to do it and it
makes her feel useful so who am I not to
take advantage
The browsing an swelling you have down
below is somthing that took me by surprise
as well. Nobody told me that was going to
happen. I had realy bad swelling, But it
dose go back to normal. In a few days it
well be all good again. I bet the swelling
is already started to go down.
Oh and it was uncomfortable for me to site
for a long time at the computer are at a
table for the fist two weeks but its just
over 3 weeks now and I can site for as
long as I like.
Looks like your going to be just fine
mate,, have your self a merry Christmas
and don't drink to much you may fall down
are be sick and give yourself an hernia
lol Ok that was a bad joke considering
merry Christmas to all

I am making good progress in recovery,
although the swelling has not yet gone
down. I am resting but also doing a few
things and I think it is good to get out
every day for a short walk at least
(unless the weather is bad).
I will be glad when this is all over, but
in the meantime I just have to be
patient.
I was planning to go back to work on 2 Jan
but I will be telling them I will return
later. I really need the rest and to be
ready to go back before I go back.
At least there is plenty to watch on TV.

Yea I think the 2 of jan is a bit early.
took me longer to recover then I thought
but am fighting fit again now The swelling well
go down tho,, Should start to right about
now. You well feel better when you can
take the dressing of and have a bath. That
made the world of difference to me.
Yea we are lucky in that way cos there
lots of stuff on TV at this time of the
year..
Still enjoy watching the boned ones

Hi Bluey, I went back to work on 9
January, and am making good progress. I
still occasionally get a slight soreness
or twinge of pain where the mesh is or
around that area, but no serious pain or
anything bad. I am almost back to normal,
but of course no heavy lifting, so I take
it easy in some things and no rushing
around.
I got a letter yesterday from the hospital
with a follow-up appointment in early
March, so I will go to that.
