Help Me! I Need Your Advice On Tmj
Posted: 03-26-04 06:39am

Iam on the waiting list to have double tmj implants. Parts are being made in the usa. I would love to hear from anyone who is waiting or had this op done or knows anybody who has. My left condyle disc is completly worn and my right is not much better. I am a 52 year old woman and my doctors cannot say why this has happened. The tmj implant patient imfomation booklet is very scary reading. Hope someone can help. I would also like to hear from anyone who like me have problems eating with jaw pain and headaches. When I open my jaw it swings to one side.
I hope there is someone who can give me some advice.

Dear tealady,
sorry to hear that you have tmj. I'm guessing that your doctor has taken a tomogram of your joint therefore he/she is able to tell you that your condyle is worn. I'm not sure what you mean by your disc is worn. It's critical that you know, surgery is not the option here. Many people have actually gotten worse because of surgery. Have you tried splint therapy? Are you able to fully open your mouth? How about laterally? If you have not taken a tomogram, you must do that first. It shows you where the condyle is. The condyle should be in the "gelb 4/7" vicinity. About 1mm from the top and 3mm from the back. But please no surgery until you have tried the correct splint treatment.
