P.i.d. - Still Painful After a Week of Antibiotics Posted: 09-28-07 16:47pm
I'm 21 years old, generally in good health
other than this problem! I'll explain as
fully as possible, sorry if this is very
long...
I went for an STI screen a couple of
months ago, was all negative apart from
B.V. which I was given Metronidazole (I
think) for. At the same time I mentioned
to the doctor that I had been having some
lower abdominal pain; he gave me an
internal examination and ruled out P.I.D.
I was fine after that, but over the summer
suffered from a recurring ear infection
which I was on numerous courses of
antibiotics for - Amoxicillin twice, and
Cefaclor/Cefalon (can't remember the
name). I then developed an infection in my
wisdom teeth and was given Metronidazole
again. I'm not sure if any of that is
important but I wanted to point out the
amount of antibiotics I have recently been
on in case it has any relevance.
Moving on...
I took the morning-after pill about a
month ago (I am on the pill but I had been
on all these antibiotics and didn't want
to take the risk). My period after that
was 5 days late (started on the 3rd
September), lasted for longer and was very
heavy and more painful than usual, with
terrible mood swings and lower back pain
which I don't normally have. I put this
down to the morning-after pill but about
two days after my period had finished I
began having spotting with thick, clear
sticky discharge and blood clots, unlike
my usual period blood, accompanied by a
slight fever, occasional shooting pain in
my legs, nausea and excruciating lower
abdominal pain in a very specific area on
the left. I went to a GUM clinic for
testing and all the tests were negative
but I was diagnosed with supposed P.I.D.
due to the symptoms I was displaying (I'm
at a loss as to how I got it; both my
partner and I are STI-free - could it have
been the B.V. from a couple of months
back?). I am on a two-week course of
Ofloxacin (400mg twice daily) and
Metronidazole (400mg three times daily).
After I had been taking the antibiotics
for three days I was feeling worse, the
pain had spread to the lower right of my
abdomen aswell, my lower back was agony, I
kept getting sweats, dizziness and
headaches and on the second morning of
taking the antibiotics I woke up genuinely
feeling like I was going to die. I don't
know if these were side-effects of the
medication but I felt awful, so on the
third day I went to A&E - still in
terrible pain and still spotting - and was
told by a doctor to basically deal with
it, keep taking the antibiotics and take
painkillers and anti-spasmodics for the
cramps. Now I have been taking the
antibiotics for 8 days and I feel
generally better without the feeling of
heaviness and weakness I had before, but
yesterday the pain in the lower left of my
abdomen has returned. It's certainly not
as bad as it was last week but I am still
worried. It's the same kind of cramping
pain as before, and it's worse if I move
around or do anything, so I've been pretty
much resting at home. There's no bleeding,
but I have started getting headaches again
and I am not normally a headache sufferer.
My period is not due for another week. The
antibiotics have also given me awful
thrush which is getting me down, and I
keep reading on the internet about the
high risk of infertility associated with
P.I.D. which is worrying me.
Any advice would be appreciated, I will go
and see my G.P. on Monday but to be honest
I'm needing some reassurance right now!
Call me paranoid...

Normally I would say see your doc but
since you are, all I'm gonna say is good
luck!! Random thought- are you treating
the thrush too? Because that should be
pretty easy to treat, although might come
back before you get off the antibiotics.
Untreated PID can cause infertility, but
don't worry so much! You're getting it
treated. Did they actually do a lab test
for PID the second time? I do think you
can develop PID from BV, and the timespan
of a couple months would explain why
you're feeling so rotten now. Just
remember to voice your concerns to the GP
to make sure you have a good diagnosis.
And wear a condom until this all clears
up- you know your pills won't be effective
for a while, (I'd ask the doc how long)
and the morning after pill (wonderful
though it is) stinks. It made my period
awful and I had similar problems.
Good luck!! I'm sure you'll make it.

I Am Having the Exact Same Symptoms. Posted: 11-02-07 18:15pm
Hi Kelski,
I have just come across your blog while
searching for answers to my own problem
and your story matches mine exact. I am 5
days into taking meds and same felt better
at first but am still having weird
cramping. I know your post is a few
months old now but I'm really hoping you
can touch base with me about how are you
doing now and also to compare stories. I
hope you are well. Thank you.
