Asthma, Bronchitis, What Else Could It Be? Posted: 10-03-07 16:09pm
For about 2 months, I have had chest
tightness, phlegm production, localized
chest pain, and chronic cough. I first
went to my primary care physician, and he
first recommended claratin and prilosec,
thinking it might be allergy or GERD
related. After 2 weeks with no success,
he performed a breathing test and though
the results were normal, he perscribed
albuterol. For the first week, albuterol
definitely curbed the cough, but the
phlegm and chest pain still continued. I
had a chest x-ray two months ago, and that
came back completely negative.
He referred me to a specialist. I went
through a barrage of breathing tests, and
he put me on a trial of advair. For the
first week, it worked like a charm.
Unfortunately, during the past few days
the symptoms are back. Most of all, I
have localized chest pain on my right side
ONLY. The localized chest pain on the
right side seems to occur when I have a
deep breath or when I strech/move a
certain way.
Does anyone have any idea what it could
be?
Any advice?

The Specialists' Diagnosis was asthma and
to try Advair and that it would more than
likely relieve the cough. For my first
25 years on this earth, I have never had
any hint of asthma

I feel your pain.... For the past 3 months
I've had chest tightness. Breathing tests
& blood tests came up normal. Chest
Xray - normal. EKG and all heart related
functions....normal.
I've been diagnosed with allergy related
asthma.
I was given a rescue inhalter that didn't
do much at all. I was given Advair for
2.5 months. The Advair helped immediately
with the chest tightness but made other
symptoms worsen and the original symptoms
(tightness/burning)came back.
I'm currently on Singulair which has
helped in many ways.... its' only been a
week or so - hard to tell if this is a
long term benefit. Some days I feel
really good while other days ..not so
good.
I honestly have NO idea what sudden
allergy I have and/or what I'm eating or
exposed to that I haven't been exposed to
in the past 20 years. Unless my body has
decided to go nutso on me.... I do have a
history of lots of allergies and a couple
weird one-time episodes - but this whole
chest tightness thing is totally new to
me. I see the doc on Oct 18th for a
follow up ..

one of my elder sisters had the problem of
bronchitis. it is an inflammation of the
mucous membranes of the bronchial tubes,
causing a persistent cough that produces
considerable quantities of sputum.
Bronchitis is an inflammation of the
bronchi (lung airways), resulting in
persistent cough that produces
consideration quantities of sputum
(phlegm). Bronchitis is more common in
smokers and in areas with high atmospheric
pollution.
