Colon Cancer 3a - Statistics and Cure/Survival Rates? Posted: 10-05-07 05:27am
My mom was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer
in Singapore. We are original from the US
but are seeking treatment here b/c she
also had strokes during her colonoscopy
and surgery to remove the tumor. 2 out of
29 lymph nodes were positive for cancer.
Her apical lymph nodes were not positive.
She will do 8 cycles of chemo. Each cycle
consists of slow IV of 5-Fu for 3 weeks
and infusion of oxaliplatin over 48 hours.
Is this similar to treatment in the
States. Doctors say cure rate is 75%
after chemo? Please tell me the
statistics of cure and survival for ehr
diagnosis.
thank you

Hi!
Colon cancer survival rates for people who
live in the U.S. (the five-year survival
rate - the percentage of patients alive
five years after their initial colon
cancer diagnosis) are 83% for colon cancer
stage 3a.
Chemotherapy can be used for many stages,
but usually starting from stage 3.
Chemotherapy given before or after surgery
can destroy microscopic areas of cancer
and increases the chances of a cure.
A combination of drugs often works better
than a single drug in treating colorectal
cancer. The most commonly used drugs are:
Fluorouracil (5-FU) combined with
leucovorin.
Fluorouracil (5-FU) combined with
leucovorin and oxaliplatin.
Capecitabine, sometimes combined with
irinotecan or oxaliplatin.
Oxaliplatin, sometimes combined with
5-FU.
Irinotecan, sometimes combined with 5-FU.
In some studies, people who had surgery
and then were given the chemotherapy drugs
fluorouracil (5-FU) and leucovorin lived
longer.
I guess your mother will receive one of
the combination of drugs, also, used in
U.S.
Best wishes to you and your family!
Please, keep us updated about your mum's
health!
Thinking of you!

Is your mother getting leucovorin with her
fluorouracil? If you read up on
leucovorin, you should see the reason
why...to extend the brief time that the
fluorouracil is potent.
