Hi...

I had HPV HG/CIN III in 99. Had lazer surgery and have not had a bad pap till now. Oct-07 bad pap/ bab colposcopy. I am told I have moderate dysplasia and need to undergo leep.

Here's my question. If I've had 3 quarters removed in 99 and now have a leep can I have a baby? I want a functional cervix as I've not had a chance for children yet. Sad

I'm freakin out. The dr only offered me the leep option and from my discussions with the nurse she is not offering cryo or laser as she doesn't do them. Is that a problem?

Also...I asked for a cervical length test before the procedure and the nurse said she may not do one as she only did that for pregnancies?

Doesn't it make sense if she was not the physisican that preformed my previous procedures that she would want to know what were dealing with here (length wise?)

I'm very frustrated. I have a meeting with her Wednesday that I called to get after I was sitting around thinking about leep without discussion. We have a leep scheduled this friday but I haven't even talked to my dr yet. Is that odd or what!?!

I have had five good years with her....my bf cheated (confirmed) and now I may never have kids again and she's going to lop off my cervix and go to lunch? At least thats my fear.???

Actually, a LEEP is a pretty non-invasive procedure. Unless they have to do a DEEP LEEP your cervix will not be weakened. A deep LEEP would then be considered a CONE and is only done if the dysplasia has spread into the deeper parts of the cervix. Not usually done for moderate dysplasia.

The LEEP takes less than 5 minutes to do. Any questions you have can be answered then during the set up - setting up for the procedure actually takes longer than the procedure itself!

Think of the LEEP as taking the top layer of 'skin' off the cervix. This is where your dysplasia resides. The only problems with pregnancy this can ever cause would be if you got an infection and your cervix closed. Or if they took so much (like a CONE) and your cervix weakened. Many women have multiple LEEPS and still go on to have children. It is a safe procedure.

Good luck at your appointment.

.....
so.....even though I had a high grade CIN III procedure where 3/4 was taken a leep will most likely not cause me to have an incompetent cervix in the future???

I'm so freaked out! I'm believing you because I want to .....but I have to know if I will ever be able to have kids.....I would rather take my 40% chance at trying to reverse my moderate dysplasia with supplements/diet before I let someone take my cervix and doom me to a life without children! Sad ....could totally cry.

If you could reverse your dysplasia with diet and supplements, they wouldn't have LEEPS in the first place.

Have you read up on incompetent cervix? You know they can stitch it closed then, if necessary, right?

The only problem with a weakened cervix would be that you would not be able to carry a baby without the stitch. It is called a cerclage. Look it up.

I found this:
What are the benefits of a cerclage?
Cervical cerclage helps prevent miscarriage or premature labor caused by cervical incompetence. The procedure is successful in 85% to 90% of cases.

You face death if your dysplasia turns to cancer. This is easily treatable. You aren't doomed in any means.

So....
Can a cerclage be used if you have a barely there cervix?
Do you have to be put on bedrest if you have a cerclage?

Im a little freaked out. I'm wondering if laser would be better than leep?

I'm a little freaked out that this dr doesn't have options. Options are always good in my opinion. If she only offers leep should I be concerned. I'm thinking since I started with laser I feel better going that route.

I've researched leep and it says it is known to cause cervical incompetence and have a higher risk of things related to pregnancy than does laser. I may ask her if she can refer me to someone who would do laser.

What do you know/ your thoughts on this.

You should seek a second opinion if you are not comfortable.

Good luck!
