Can I Still Lift Weights Despite Surgery On Arm? Posted: 10-07-07 21:25pm
When I was 17 I broke my forearm and had
to get surgery to fix it, where they put
in plates and screws on my ulna and
radius. Specifically I have 1 plate and 7
screws on my ulna and 1 plate and 7 screws
on my radius. When my arm healed I lifted
weights very seriously for about a year
and it never posed any problems. I would
feel a little amount of slight discomfort
in the arm while doing my bicep curls, but
as soon as I was done with my set it would
go away.
Now I am 22 years old and I want to lift
weights again. I want to know if there are
any medical risks to doing so? If so, how
probable is it that anything could happen
to my arm? I have been lifting weights for
about 2 weeks now, and I still feel the
same slight discomfort while doing bicep
curls. Aside from that it doesn't ever
really hurt. However, I am still very
paranoid about it and just want to know
what risk I am taking (if any) and what
are the chances of these risks.

Instead of asking us for this type of
thing, you should go back to the source
and see if you can contact the doctor's
who gave you this surgery, most likely
none of us had exactly the same type of
surgery you did and couldn't really give
you an answer. One might have a surgery
similar to yours, but just from a little
difference could make the difference when
doing physical activities like weight
training. Call the doctor up.

My PE teacher had a surgery on his rotator
cuff and he's older than you (he's 32) and
he's still lifting. However, you might
have to start off with light lifting
first.
