Can't Find the Right Medication For My Symptoms. On Medicaid Posted: 10-08-07 20:51pm
i was diagnosed with schizophrenia many
years ago due to hearing voices. i have
been on haldol which was crippling, got
off it, then onto risperdal, geodon, and
seroquel. the most tolerable is risperdal
however i tend to need something to help
me get to sleep very badly. i dont fall
asleep easily. thats when my psychiatric
nurse moved me on to geodon then seroquel
along with risperal. both of these i find
not very tolerable at all. with seroquel
i will sleep very sound though i might
suffer some bad hallucinations getting
there. and i will oversleep with it.
with geodon i will sleep ok, get to sleep
easy enough, though when i wake up i dont
want to get out of bed. if i do i simply
retreat to my bed and just lay there sort
of hoping i could sleep or rest but just
lay down for many hours and when i do
finally get out of bed when i move around
i will put on these horrible faces due to
me not being able to tolerate it.
risperdal would be ok if i could sleep.
the voices are pretty much not an issue.
i was hoping if someone could suggest a
medicaid medication that might work given
what i have said that i can suggest to my
psychiatric nurse.
i would appreciate it very much since i
feel my psychiatric nurse has run out of
options. i dont know what she will put me
on next.
thank you very much

I found that on zyprexa I was sleeping a
lot, also during the day. Risperdal is the
best for me, I sleep just enough. What's
your dose of risperdal? Maybe you need a
bit more of it? I did know a person that
slept all day becasue of it though.
Why can't you fall asleep? is it the
rushing thoughts or stuff? Do you think
you might have a sleeping disorder instead
of schizophrenia being the culprit?

I Dont Hear Voices Very Often Or Have Rushing Thoughts. Posted: 10-09-07 18:27pm
i take 4mg of risperdal during the day and
4mg at night. still can't get to sleep.
also after i do fall asleep i tend to
sleep for 12 hours or so. thats a long
time to have to be in bed. zyprexa i have
been on but i dont remember how it
effected me. i'm thinking better than
seroquel and geodon. geodon is the worst
out of a lower dose of seroquel and geodon
since it nearly caused me to have a car
wreck and i was startled that i could not
catch my own bad judgement. it also makes
me make weird faces because of how bad i
feel. i still feel very poorly from
seroquel after i wake up. also after
about 12 hours of sleep. both of them
undesireable for me. risperdal i manage
the best only occasionally hear voices.
not being able to get to sleep i dont like
at all though.

If you sleep 12 hrs it's no wonder you
can't get to sleep. Whenever I sleep that
long the next night I can't sleep till 4
am. You should try to wake up earlier, set
an alarm clock or have someone wake you.
It might be hard at first.

Have you talked to your psych nurse about
putting you on a supplimental medicine
just to help with the insomnia? Some good
sleep meds to try: trazodone, vistaril
(similiar to benadryl) or possibly try a
benzodiazepine like ativan or xanax
although these are not good for use every
night as they are habit forming.
Risperdal seems to be a good medicine but
maybe have your nurse try giving you a
larger dose in the AM and a smaller dose
at night, or moving your nighttime dose up
to say 4pm.
