I am confused about pre-term labor. I had
pre-term labor at 35 weeks with my first
pregnancy 7 years ago. I am now 31 weeks
and experiencing the same symptoms (low
back pain, menstrual like cramps, change
in vaginal discharge and more than 6
contractions a hour). I have moved since
my last pregnancy and had to change
physicians. I visited my ob's office last
week and was examined by the nurse
practioner who said my cervix with
thinning but not dilating. She talked to
my ob who put me on nifedipine every 6
hours and light bed-rest for one week.
After 2 days my symptoms and contractions
had not stopped I called the ob again who
said it was not a problem because my
contractions were not painful and did seem
to lessen after first taking the
nifedipine. That night I went to the
hospital when my contractions were every
2-3 minutes. My doctor was there and
checked me and said my cervix had not
changed and did not seem concerned at all
that this would send me into active labor
and said it was just how my body reacts.
It has been five days and I am still
having all of the same symptoms. I feel
like I should get a second opinion and
would like some advice. Thank you.

I started to go into preterm labor with my
daughter at 33 weeks. It all started
with losing the mucus plug when I went to
the bathroom there was blood. The
doctor on call was not my doctor and he
told me that I shouldn't worry about it, I
was still bleeding about a half hour later
so I called again and he said its probably
nothing but if I was that worried I should
go to my hospital. So I went and when I
got there they said it was a good thing I
came in because they were able to slow the
contractions (that I couldn't feel at all)
and give me meds, so two days later I went
home with meds and bed rest and at 38
weeks I had my daughter. I think it's
always best to trust your instincts and if
you think that you need a second opinion
even if it does turn out to be the same
response I say go for it because there is
nothing better than a healthy baby with a
concerned mother. Good luck!

Pre-term Labor Posted: 11-21-05 19:31pm
I had pre term labor with my first child,
starting at 20 weeks. I went on brethine,
every twelve hours. This helped for a few
days, until I went into labor again. I
went to the er, and the Dr. Told me to
take it every 8 hours. This kept
happening until I had to take the
medication every two hours around the
clock. Just make sure to keep your Dr.
Informed. Don't feel like you are bugging
him. I lpractically ived at my Dr.'s
office during that pregnancy! By the way,
I delivered a very healthy baby girl!
