Legalizing All Drugs...what Do You Think? Posted: 10-11-07 18:32pm
I've been having some debates with my
significant other. He says legalize them
all, I say not.
Some thoughts?

Why?
His argument is centered around safety
issues.

There is the clear issue of safety
concerned with these drugs.
Yes, making them legal will make
administering them safer... but the
effects of many of the hard drugs are far
too dangerous for them to be used for
recreation. Many of them are lethal. For
this reason alone, they need to stay
illegal.

People who want them are going to get
them, illegal, lethal, dangerous, or not.
This keeps the drug dealers off the
street, and less danger there for innocent
people.
And...pople can do what they want with
their bodies...right?

I do not believe people should be able to
do something that can harm other people.
Drugs do that. They are not just harmful
to the user, they are harmful to others.
Secondly, most heavy drugs are highly
addictive. They also clearly
degrade a person's ability to work and
function in normal society. If drugs were
legal, people would use them, not go to
work, and endanger themselves and those
around them. By keeping drugs illegal and
on the fringe, we protect ourselves and
society as a whole. I feel society would
fall apart if hard drugs were legal.

People are allowed to do things that can
harm other people all the time.
Who here would start taking drugs if they
were legal tomorrow?

I did a paper on this once. It's premise
was that drugs should be legal. they
should be regulated throught the
government like alcohol. The people who
are addicts will eventually die and thus
we do not have to worry about their
addiction any more. Taxes from sales
would go to paying for drug prevention
classes. I don't necessarily believe
this, but I spent 6 weeks drafting a
"modest proposal" on it. It was pretty
interesting.
I think people should be able to put
whetever the hell they want into their
bodies, period. As long as they aren't
driving around all over and running over
little old ladies. I would insist that
offences perpetrated while under the
influence of drugs would be much more
strictly punished.
I know if drugs were legalized tomorrow,
it would not change my habits in the
least, but I would not live in fear of
having MJ in my house. I wouldn't do
anything else, though. None of it was
ever really that enjoyable for me in the
first place.

I'm in a bind.
On one hand, I think people should be able
to do with their bodies as they please,
but on the other I think society is
obligated to regulate certain things to
enhance the quality of life for it's
citizens (for example, chemicals in food,
medications, drugs, etc.). Protect people
from themselves, so to speak.
I'm trying to work out: at what point does
autonomy and enhancement of society's
functioning start to stampede over each
other?
Does someone have the right to make a bad
decision? Is there such a thing as a
decision that does not impact anyone
else?
Oh my god I need to go to bed.
(I still think drugs should be illegal...I
don't want some dumb kid to see heroin for
sale in Kroger's and start shooting it up,
get hooked, and the fan is splattered by
fecal matter. Who here, as a kid, didn't
make a dumb decision to try something even
though you knew it was a bad idea?)

Pot I'd be okay with legalizing; I've
never met a druggie high on just pot - no
other substances involved - who was a
threat. Hungry yes; but so mellow you
could run them over with lifeflight and
they'd go "cool".. Odd from a career
correctional officer yes but in reality it
is a very mellow drug.
What I would be concerned about is the
rise in person to person and property
crimes to fund the little weed..

I could see legalizing marijuana, but not
any of the others.
My reasoning...
Marijuana isn't addicting. There are no
withdrawals from quitting either.
All the other drugs are addicting and can
cause serious health problems.
Marijuana is actually prescribed to
people....

I also don't see a problem with legalizing
MJ. Though I don't use it
personally...anymore, I agree with Jincks.
The worst crime you would be guilty of
committing on pot would be possibly
mugging the pizza delivery driver or
gluttany.
I do believe that people should be able to
put whatever they want into their bodies,
but I wouldn't want to see drugs like
heroin, coke, or crack legal. Addcits
would be robbing the places that sell it,
because we all know if the government
regulated it they would double the price
and nobody could afford it anyway.
We have a methadone clinic up the road and
you should see the people that frequent
that area. It's like Halloween every day.

If it were legalized, I think it would be
cheaper.
The government could make tons of money
from taxing it too.
I've never once heard of anyone overdosing
and dying because of marijuana...

You know, I was just talking to my friend
the other day about Japan. They have beer
vending machines on street corners and
they don't seem to have a problem with
underage drinking.
I asked him to imagine those here in the
states. We both started laughing because
we both knew what would happen. Those
things would get pillaged so fast from
kids that they would have to put a
security guard on each one.
Basically, what I'm saying is that we
are just a different society. Some
societies have had luck with legalizing
other drugs. I don't believe that we're
one of them.
Crystal Meth being legal? Wow, imagine
that? That doesn't solve a serious
problem and that's the fact that a lot of
these users spiral downward that they
can't even hold a job. Being legal or not,
these people will still need money for the
drug and they'll get it basically the same
way they are now. Stealing. Identity theft
is a big thing in the crystal meth world.
Imagine if it was legal. That just means
more people doing it. That will only
create more problems for the rest of us.
Health care will get worse, welfare will
get worse, crime will get worse.
If they were going to legalize any drug. I
agree with everyone else. Legalize the
good ole fashion pot. While I quit smoking
it myself, I think that it is much safer
than alcohol.

I agree that pot is safer than alcohol,
having seen many people drink WAY to much
and risking their life- and others.
I do have to say though, that there are
people who base their morals on law- maybe
loosely but what is "legal" sends a
message to some about what is OK. Does
that make any sense? I really do think
that certain things, being illegal, would
be used less. I think the threat of
punishment really does stop some people.

Then you have to look at the rate of
alcoholism.. Would be it be so high if
that drug had not been made legal? Maybe
they thought by making it legal not so
many would want it. No. I don’t think
drugs should be made legal. I think to
many people would kill themselves. No self
control.

Yeah that makes sense. Not to get off the
subject. (But I did) some mothers feel
that way about the birth control pill too.
That it lets the girl think it is ok to
have sex. Sort of what you mean I think..
