I was told i had this complaint 3 months
ago.I have been given up smoking for
eighteen months now.Every now and then i
have been bringing up this blood first
thing when i get up in the morning after
lying down .After several cameras into my
lungs, this was the diagnosis.I have never
had a cough since giving up smoking but
the doctor says this complaint never goes
away.
Has anyone else out there got this
complaint?I would like to know if it gets
any worse long term,VIV

Hi!
As your doctor said this disease never
goes away. Acctually, is one of the
chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.
Ectasis is a greek word and means widening
and bronchi are airways. So, you have
widening of the bronchi or their branches.
The wall of the bronchi is damaged,
inelastic and dilated. This results in
airflow obstruction and sputum is trapped
in this areas. Due to impaired clearance
of secretions, sputum becomes an
environment conducive to the growth of
infectious pathogens. The more infections
that the lungs experience, the more
damaged alveoli become. That creates a
destructive cycle within this disease.
It can be congenital (due to some birth
defects and is manifested later during
lifetime) and acquired bronchiectasis. The
last one can be result of respiratory
infections suffered, especially, during
the childhood (whooping cough, measles),
obstructions (inhaled foreign body),
inhalation and aspiration of different
toxic gases, alcoholism, heroin (drug
use), and various allergies.
Have you suffered from tuberculosis?
Have you experienced severe cases of
pneumonia or influenza?
Sometimes, this disease is associated with
other chronic medical conditions.
Do you have problems with your bowel
movements?
Do you suffer from joint pain?
Chronic cough is one of the main symptoms
that are experienced by patient with
bronchectasis (more than 70% of patient)
Did you cough a lot?
For how long you have been smoking
cigarettes?
Did you cough even before you started to
smoke?
I guess you are feeling much better
without cigarettes, because cigarettes
smoke is an irritant and should be avoid
to prevent development of infections (such
as bronchitis) and further complications.
Are you experiencing other symptoms like
shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue or
weight lost?
Symptom severity can vary and
occasionally, patient can be without
symptoms.
Because of airway obstruction and impaired
clearance of secretions there is a
coughing up sputum (with blood, pus and
fuel smell) on daily bases.
You are asking if this condition is
getting worse by time.
As I mentioned before more respiratory
infections brings more damage to airway's
walls and that leads to severe obstruction
and impair clearance and this leads to new
development of infection.
That's why is so important to prevent and
control respiratory infections and
eliminate the accumulated secrets in
airways.
