Antiplatelet Antibodies
Posted: 10-16-07 17:07pm

Does anyone know anything about antiplatelet antibodies and what it means if you have them? I went in today to get my blood drawn to check for this, but I don't see my doctor until tomorrow to know what it will mean for me and my baby if I test positive for them. Any help would be great!! Very

Do you have them or are you being tested for them?

Me neither, but everything I read is confusing and scary. Shocked I'll ask my doctor why they are testing for them tomorrow. I'm guessing that my platelet count has fallen again, since they've already fallen from 180 to 102, but I don't know what it means if they've fallen more.

This is probably just a follow up. Wait until you can talk to your doctor.

Yeah... they wouldn't even know if your platelets had dropped unless they test you for it Smile

They are just monitoring it.

Always, always, always ask your doctor whenever s/he orders tests. That way you won't have to go home and worry and wonder.

lol. She usually tells me why she's ordering tests, but the nurse called me yesterday and wanted me to come in for a blood test before my appt tomorrow, so I did.

Oh well, I'll wonder and worry until tomorrow afternoon...whoohoo. Smile

They are testing so he knows what to tell you at your appointment. Or why would they have scheduled it before your appointment and not after? Smile

Well I think low platelet counts are more worrisome than a rash. lol.

Maybe I'm just over thinking this, but it takes a week to get blood results back, not a day, so that wouldn't be why she had them test for it today. I could've been tested for it tomorrow after my appt. And 2 weeks ago, they rechecked my platelet count after they've found out they dropped, and they dropped again according to my last test. Anyway, thanks for helping!

Found This!

aha! look what i found!!!!!!!

Platelet levels vary from person to person, but are usually between 150 and 400 million per millilitre of blood. During pregnancy it's normal for your platelet count to fall slightly, and up to eight per cent of pregnant women have platelet counts of between 100 and 150 million per millilitre of blood. This is because your body produces more of the liquid part of blood (plasma) during pregnancy, which means your platelets become more dilute. This doesn't affect their performance, though - they can still do their job.

If a blood test shows that your platelet count is low, it may be useful to compare it to what your count was before you got pregnant. Ask your GP to look in your notes for previous blood test results. If, however, you have had your first ever blood test in pregnancy (as many women do) there may be no way of knowing your previous level.

If it appears that your platelet count is lower than usual, it should be repeated so that any further reductions can be spotted. This may mean that you need to have a few more blood tests than other mums-to:be.

The reason your midwife or doctor keeps an eye on your platelet level is that, if it becomes too low, it can start to affect your body's blood-clotting ability. This means you could have a higher risk of abnormal bleeding during or after birth, particularly if you need to have a caesarean. Currently there is no agreement about what "too low" means and at what point your risk of abnormal bleeding starts to increase.

An abnormally low platelet count in pregnancy is usually associated with a pre-existing condition, such as lupus, or with certain medications, such as heparin. In this case, you and your doctor would normally be aware of the possibility of a low platelet count already, and can plan your antenatal care accordingly.

Or it could be a sign of an underlying problem with your pregnancy, such as HELLP syndrome, which is a rare complication of pre-eclampsia. In this case you would have other symptoms, such as headaches, nausea and pain in your upper abdomen.

Yea, I've read the exact same thing. I know my levels went from 180 at the beginning of pregnancy to 102 at 28 weeks, and they've dropped more in the last 2 weeks but I don't know the exact levels now.

My doctor told me that it means that my blood could have problems clotting during delivery, but thats all she said.

Yea I guess so. But wouldn't they say they're testing for my platelet counts and not antiplatelet antibodies?? That's what confuses me. The lady said she was checking my complete blood count, so I guess that would include the platelet levels too, but they're also checking for the prescence of antibodies.

It sounds like they are just being really thorough. Antiplatelet antibodies are something that attacks platelets which could cause your count to go even lower. It's best that they find this out now before you go in for delivery. I know it's hard not to worry but your doctor has really told you what you need to know. Telling someone too much before they have all the information can make it very scary and worrisome.

Thanks monkeygirl...sorry I don't know your name. Smile I figured that is what they were if I have them. Guess I'll see when they get the results in. Thanks.
