Gun Control And Mental Health

(sigh)

So a group of people from the Virginia Tech shooting and from the NRA are trying to get gun control tightened and restrict mentally ill people from getting guns.

What do you all think??

I'll tell ya what I think... I'm quite upset about it. There are plenty of mentally ill people who nowhere near going out and killing people. DISCRIMINATION!!!! We have no right to deny someone ANYTHING based on their health. That's ridiculous.

Was the guy from v-tech mentally ill?

If they're mentally ill in the select kinds that ARE prone to violence they should be refused a gun until they are healed.

if referring to somebody "of unsound mind" then yes, i totally agree. Anyone who doesnt have the capacity to make rational decisions shouldnt be allowed to carry any sort of weopon.

Yes, you should totally allow people who are prone to violent rages access to DEADLY FREAKING WEAPONS.

Of course, I don't think anyone should have them, what with me being a bleeding heart liberal Brit and all. Wink

wow, I couldn't even imagine ever owning/holding/firing a gun.
So why is it legal in US for people to own guns? I can understand for protection, but really wouldn't that be the only plausible excuse?

It is related to the very reasons we became an independent nation. Lords of Europe were the only people allowed to carry weapons, so the right for ALL Americans to "bear arms" is a big thing. To some people. I hate guns. Only the military, police members and hunters need them.

I hate guns too. I've had to use one before in the military, but don't own one now. I like the way they do it in Britain. Therefore, I agree that weapons should not be allowed to anyone with violent tendencies and I would love to see stricter gun laws here in the US.

Work with enough mentally ill people, and you'll understand why if there is a past hx of a dx of MI a gun should be a forbidden tool. Of course there are mentally ill people who are not going to kill anyone. Until the day they do.

Yup, it's total discimination, I agree. But I do not want someone with antisocial personality d/o and no conscience to have easy access to a gun. 'Course they could get one anyway, but the more roadblocks the merrier.

Just like there are mentally healthy people who are not going to kill anyone. Until the day they do.

I agree with Rodge; no guns, no where.

I don't know, so if that's not sarcasm... How is v-tech related to mentally-ill people?

Gun crime is actually rising in Britain. An eleven-year-old boy was shot in the head in a pub car park a few weeks ago, and I think something similar happened even more recently. I hate it.

We should melt all the stupid things and make something useful. Like forks. There are never enough forks in my house. Razz

I'm sorry, I thought you were kidding b/c a man walked into a university building and shot up the place, had a meltdown videotaped and his writings were disorganized and delusional, a lengthy history with the mental health system, and you asked if he was mentally ill. Wink

I'm teasing you...

Aaah. I agree with several people: Mentally stable people don't need guns, nor to mentally unstable people, no matter how placid they seem.

i dont think placid could be used to describe mentally unstable people. I've personally never met somebody who was mentally unstable that wasnt a complete wreck.

maybe its just my lack of experience.

Me too Rain.. And what about the ones that seem ok and then "click" they want to kill their wife/husband and kids?

I never wanted to kill anyone, not even myself.. But at times I thought the pain was so bad being death might be better..

People go through some trying time.. Some can't handle it and turn.. Boom!! someone is dead and others are saying "they seems like such a nice guy/girl.
