Is This Vitamin Combo Ok 2x/day??? Posted: 10-20-07 14:10pm
Hi all, I've been taking the following
vitamins twice a day for the last several
years. I just want to make sure that I'm
not causing any potential problems. I'm
not taking them for any specific reason,
and it's more of a habit now than
anything. Thanks.
Multi-Vitamin
Vitamin C
Vitamin B12
Vitamin E
Flaxseed Oil
FYI: I'm a healthy 26 year old male; I
work-out 5X/week.

Healthy 26 year old, work out.
I would suggest 1 time a day for all
those.
you eat healthy too right?

I eat fairly healthy, especially during
the week. On the weekends I don't workout
and my diet slides down-hill.

You should be in pretty good shape still.
if you don't feel as great after, you can
always go back to the routine of twice a
day. =)

So you don't know why you are taking them,
just taking them out of habit? Are you
aware what those vitamins do? Or how much
intake is necessary, and how much is
considered toxic? What does your
multivitamin contain, and why are you just
taking those specific vitamins?

I was instructed by my
strength/conditioning coach to take them
years ago, and took his word on it.

Heh, a bit of advice from me, don't just
follow somebody just because they are
seemingly superior in a field of
knowledge/interest without doing some
research yourself first. What is the point
of taking Vitamin E if you don't know its
effects? What does Vitamin C do? Or
Vitamin B12?
Typically, one should NOT have a need to
take supplemental vitamins if they have a
healthy diet. It is recommended because
Americans generally can't take care of
themselves in terms of health.
Kind of embarrassing to be a parrot. "Hey,
I'm a pretty healthy guy, I take
multivitamins like Vitamin E" "Oh really,
that sounds cool, what does Vitamin E do?"
"Uuh.... I don't know I just take it
because its a vitamin and my coach said
so". The value of what we do means so
little if we don't know what to make of it
=)
Allow me to teach you something today
Vitamin C: It is not essential for life,
as in a vital nutrient, but it is has many
useful functions. It is a potent
antioxidant (which assists in preventing
cell based diseases by reacting with free
radicals [highly reactive molecules caused
by oxidation that can cause cancer]) by
protecting the water areas of the body and
regenerates Vitamin E (another
antioxidant). It;s functions are also used
for immune function (this is something the
public generally knows), this vitamin is
used up during infections and needs to be
replenished. It also assists in protecting
the longs (higher intake for smokers thus,
is ideal). It also assists in skin/blood
vessel health. Additionally it assists in
producing a stress hormone, it assists in
detoxifying the liver, and increases iron
absorption.
Note: Iron absorption, iron is not needed
much by men because we do not lose much,
it can be toxic to have too much. Women
however, because of their
periods/menstruation cycles and when they
conceive children, need higher
concentrations. Thus, for men, if you know
you have do intake iron regularly in your
diet (8 mg is recommended per day for
men), make sure to take multivitamins that
do not give you iron. Women, need about 18
mg. Since (as mentioned above on Vitamin
C) Vitamin C assists in iron absorption,
be sure to drink orange juice (not tea,
not coffee, they can actually reduce iron
absorption) to get the most out of your
iron supplements.
Vitamin E is an antioxidant for lipids
(fat) in the body (protecting the cell
membrane in cells), deficiency in it can
lead to anemia (fragile blood cells). It
may also assist in increasing blood flow
in the elderly.
B12, quite important, heavily correlated
to anemia. It's functions include Folate
metabolism(folate is a coenzyme that
assists in amino acid metabolism and DNA
synthesis), amino acid metabolism, energy
metabolism and hormone production. Another
interesting fact, particularly one that
Pernicious Anemic people should be aware
of, is that B12 intake will cause your
saliva to produce r-protein, which
enhances effectiveness of B12 by coating
it and thus preventing it to break down in
the stomach. This r-protein/B12 complex
would then cause the stomach to produce an
absorption factor known as intrinsic
factor that helps assist with B12 break
down. A lack of B12 can likely cause
anemia, so anybody who has a good intake
of B12 vitamins but are still anemic, may
have a lack of intrinsic factor being
produced.
