to Continue With Ortho Or Not? Posted: 10-21-07 08:09am
Basically, I am having ortho work redone
for cosmetic reasons. I am now having
problems finding my proper bite. Ortho is
ready to take off the braces and says that
she has done all she can do (despite that
fact that I still have a crossbite).
OVer the last month I have noticed a daily
increase in TMJD symptoms. To date I
have:
1. Mis-alignment of bite
2. Dizzyness/Light headed
3. Jaw deviates to the left when closed
4. Occasional popping
5. Ear stuffiness in both ears
6. Ache in my jaw muscles.
I went to see a TMJD doctor at a hospital
who advised I remove my braces and if the
symptoms persist use a splint or
something.
I have also seen a private TMJD doctor who
said that the overjet I had could be
causing the symptoms, though he declined
to work on my case since another ortho was
still responsible.
I would prefer to get this sorted via
ortho as I still have a brace on my upper
arch. However, with most ortho's reluctant
to take on another orthos mess up, I have
few options but to get my braces taken off
and hope for the best. I guess if I search
hard enough I might find someone willing
to adjust my bite.
Anyone else experienced TMJD following
ortho treatment?

I had all of the above. often times braces
make it worse or actually cause it. I
personally would rather have crooked teeth
than be in pain. I know a type of doctor
that could do what you need to do and
still keep the bite proper. I would get
the braces off and go in a different
direction.

I had braces for about a month and it made
my TMJ a lot worse, I had to get them
removed by someone else as the guy who put
them on basically works part time and
wouldn't have been able to see me for 2
weeks, I think that for adults orthodontic
work is pretty serious as the jaw is
already fully developed and teeth are not
as easily moved as when a person is
younger. I am currently looking for a TMJ
specialist to consult with him about what
I should do next, I actually don't have
much pain anymore but my bite is still off
so I need to get this corrected and from
what I can tell an orthodontist only can
do so much as its possible that the teeth
are worn or just naturally don't fit right
together to where something additional may
need to be done, such as capping (I'm
still looking into this) to make the bite
fit.
