Newborn Constipation..?? New Mommy!
Posted: 10-22-07 14:34pm

Hello, I have a 5 week old, this is my first child so im a little concerned that my daughter is constipated. She hasnt had a bowel movement in 3 days but her eating pattern is normal. She eats fine and urinates regulary so I know shes not dehidrated. Is not having a bowel movement for that long normal??? Any information would be helpful.

Thank you,
J

I don't think that is normal. It sounds like constipation to me (as someone who isn't a doctor but has a fairly new child).
My medical assistant best friend told me to put the thermometer in Kyleigh's rump to stimulate the bowels. It worked. Just make sure to use some lube. Call your doctor otherwise.

HI!

Are you breastfeeding?Because breastfed babies can go up to 3 weeks without doing a poo.It is 100% normal.Because they use all of the nutrients in breastmilk, they are utilising every bit of it so there is very little waste(poo).

My little girl usually has 1 poo every couple of weeks.

3 weeks? i honesly never heard that!

If your baby is constipated then do some gentle downward massages to help along with its desent . You can also give the baby some water.

I've never heard of a baby going 3 weeks without a poo either. Breastfed babies sometimes do go 4-5 days without one, but 3 weeks is to long.

A little bit of karo syrup or prune juice in the bottle will help, just don't give too much.

Yes...it IS true...they CAN go up to 3 weeks....it is rare..but it has been documented and known to happen...
With that said...3 days is completely normal for an infant of that age. Especially if he/she is breastfed......it is quite normal for a b.fed baby to go 4 -5 days without a bowel movement.
I really wouldn't worry about it until you get upwards of over a week.

Another remedy is to put 1 tsp. sugar into 4oz. of boiling water....when cooled give 1 oz. over an hour and every 2 hours after that.

Hope this helps.
Sue.
