Would Love Really Work?

I went to see Patch Adams speak last
night. I had seen him speak about 10
years ago. It was completely amazing. I
wish I could even give you some clue as to
what it was like, but I couldn't possibly
begin to reiterate what he said. It was
completely moving. In addition to
speaking about the health care issue in
America, he spoke about loving.
His answer to the violence and atrocities
in the world is for everyone to simply
love everyone else. It's so simplistic in
design, but what a profound difference it
would make in the world if this really
happened. He suggested that everyone just
sit for five minutes and really really
imagine what it would be like if we truly
loved everyone. Despite differences and
things we don't like, but looking past
that and truly loving people.
If you ever have a chance to see him
speak, I reccommend it. It is truly life
changing if you allow it to be.

I think the hitch would come from someone
trying to love a person who did them harm.
I don't think I would ever forgive or love
someone if they killed a member of my
family. The thought is of course that this
person also loves your family so s/he
would never think of killing them, but we
know things like this never happen all at
once.

Yes. But if that person was like everyone
else and loved everyone then he would have
never killed in the first place.

Yes yes, of course not.
But the point of the OP was that if
everyone loved everyone, no one would have
the need to kill anyone.

Yeah, it would never actually happen. It's
hypothetical.

no, I don't think so. Like Eiri was
saying, just because you love someone
doesn't mean you would make the best
choices for them or never do them harm.
Like your kids, for example, you love them
and would never hurt them. But there might
come a situation where you did cause them
harm but didn't know you would. such as
treat them for an illness in the wrong way
because you think it would work better but
it actually made them worse, stuff like
that.
And even if you love everybody, you can't
save everybody.

I think this could work if it was added
that people weren't allowed to lie.
I'm sure that was amazing...I'll have to
see if he'll ever come my way...

I try to love everyone and everything. I'm
a very mellow person, these days. And I
didn't even have to find God!

Heh this is one of the few topics on the
general debates that I can actually side
with.
No, to love all will not work. It never
will, and it never should. There needs to
be differences, there needs to be troubles
between each other, and hatred between
each other. A balance must be maintained.
As sentimentally sweet this notion may be,
it would never work, like communism -_-.

Love would only work if everyone had the
same personality and everyone agreed with
each other all the time.

Well, I'm going to try it anyway. I don't
think you have to agree with someone to
love them. Look at our parents. I
certainly don't always agree with them,
but I love them anyway. And my kids. I
think with love, it's easier to forgive
when things happen.

Maybe I'm cold hearted, but as far as
person-to-person relations, some things
should not be forgiven. Obviously you
can't go blaming sons for the sins of the
fathers and having wars for centuries
because your great great great great
grandfather got called a ninny by my great
great great grandfather. But I would never
expect someone to forgive a rapist or a
child molester or a killer.

Forgiveness is an amazing thing. The
forgiver often gets more out of it than
the forgiven.
