My son, a healthy 18-year-old college
student, started limping in February and
didn't know why. After a couple of visits
to the regular doc, went to an
orthopedist, who diagnosed a torn
menascus. Son had surgery in early May.
Doc said the inside of the knee was
unusually inflamed, but predicted a quick
recovery. Didn't prescribe post-op
anti-inflammatories or physical therapy --
just gave him pain killers and sent us
home. Saw the doc two weeks later and we
noted the knee seemed even worse and the
ankle was now swollen and tender; doc said
no problem, kid had been wrapping the Ace
bandage too tightly. In mid-June, son
accompanied us on three-year European
vacation w/ plenty of walking. (Doc said
it would be good for the leg.) Son limped
through Germany, Austria and Italy and we
returned to see the doc as soon as we got
back. Now the doctor said it was probably
arthitis. Went to the arthitis specialist;
he said arthitis unlikely because there
were no other symptoms and guessed it was
a bad recovery from the operation. Doc.
No. 2 prescribed antiflammatories and
month of PT, which helped considerably,
although the limp never went away. But son
went back to college, tried to wean
himself off the anti-inflammatories as
suggested and the knee got worse again.
Because of the change in medication? The
increased walking from being on campus
again? Doc. No. 1 has thrown up his hands
and is taking a "beats me" attitude. We
have another appointment with the arthitis
doc. Any ideas? What should we do? Is my
kid going to limp forever????
P.S. In the surgical notes, Doc No. 1 said
the knee was so inflamed that he had tests
done to check for knee-cap cancer. Test
was negative. Is it possible there is
something seriously wrong and the docs are
missing something?
