Noah is on the small side also. He just
had his 15 month appointment last week and
weighed in at 21 pounds 6 ounces, 10th
percentile. He's in the 50th for height
though.

Can someone explain the whole percentile
thing to me? CUz I really don't understand
it.
When I say Oni's Dr. never told me, I mean
he NEVER told me OR explained it to me.
I've always assumed it was a pointless
number.
So out of 100 babies, yours is the 97th?
Or out of a PERFECT 100%, your baby is
scoring a 97?
So if my baby was in the 50th percentile,
she'd be HALF perfect? Or not as good as a
baby in the 90th?
I'm just wondering because it's all
foreign to me.
I'm also thinking SERIOUSLY about leaving
Oni's Dr and don't want to be dumbfounded
when/if the new Dr blurts out some
percentile crap!! LOL!

lol, sarah! it's not a score!
finn's always been in the 90th, which
means he's bigger than 9 out of 10 babies.
50th means average.
30th (for example) means that baby is
smaller than 7 out of 10 babies.
all babies are different, just like we're
all different. it's just a way of keeping
track of their size.

The percentile is difficult to understand.
Basically, according to the bell curve,
anything from 25 to 75 percentile is
really considered average. Average is
where 50% of kids fall that are the same
age. If your child falls in the 50%ile,
then your child is smack dab average. Half
of the children of the same age would be
above your child in height and half would
be below. When a child is in the 97th%ile,
about 3% of the children (or 3 children
out of 100) would be above your child (in
weight or height). This is all based on a
norming sample.
Basically, you can have a child at the
10th %ile and it still may not be a
concern to the doctor. I can go into a lot
more explanation here but I will probably
just confuse people more. I work with
percentiles everyday with my job. That is
a large part of my job (sounds fun, huh?).
I am constantly having to explain and most
parents still look at my confused. I
probably do a poor job!! Visuals are much
better than just explaining it in words.

THe ONLY thing Oni's Dr. EVER told me that
was SIMILAR to what yall are talking about
it was "your child is comepletely OFF THE

an adult."
I wanted to spit in his face, and I know
he could tell. I was gnarling at the man
for CHrist's sake!! LOL!

What the heck?? Are you kidding me. Did
the doctor really say that? I would want
to spit in his face as well.
I do tend to get too technical and wordy.
I usually lose parents within the first
minute if I talk about this stuff. I need
to work on my wordiness. You should read
my reports. They are full of wordiness
jibber. No one reads them anyways.
