stop criticizing her choices as a parent
then. Im pretty sure that I would be
offended too.
and by the way, MY nutritionist, who is a
REGISTERED NURSE, told me to do so this
way. She respects your decision not to
introduce rice cereal this way, so respect
her choice to do so and lay off..

My own little planet? I can see why people
stop coming on here. Yup, I went out and
I got my own little book about laws. Emma2, would you
like a copy????? And if you are not
insulting me, why would you even say
anything or go on like that. Its rude and
very disrespectful.
Thanks Vanessa. My health nurse said the
same thing, and so did my friend who is a
nurse oh.. and my other friend who is a
nurse. I can also say that my friend who
is a doctor told me that this is ok, as
well as my other friend who is a
pediactric doctor. Everyone is different.
I will do it my way, you can do it your
way Emma2.

Look, I'm sure that they're ARE many
*NURSES* out there that say it's OK to
give a baby cereal in the bottle. But,
logically, it's NOT.
Nancy(Emma2), is going off of what any
SANE *Dr.* would recommend.
I'm sure that all of your NURSE, not DR,
friends would say it's ok. As they aren't
Dr.'s and don't know ALL proticall. And
aren't pediatricians.
Why don't you just take your baba to them
instead of the Dr? OH, because they AREN'T
Dr's!!
You're COMEPLETELY correct. You can do it
your way, and we will do it ours.
Believe me, I would have MUCh rahter added
the cereal to my baby's bottle as opposed
to spoon feeding her. It was a MESS.
But take our info with a grain of salt if
you don't like it. Just ignore it and move
on.
Just be careful is all.

Look Sarah. Please do not tell me what my
doctor friends would say or not say. I
know what they said. I appreciate your
info and suggestions. I am not saying what
I do or do not do is right or wrong.
Also, with what Nancy said, I was not
saying anything back to her about her
opinions on cereal in a bottle. I was
talking about the rude things she said to
me. I do not appreciate it, nor would I
have ever said anything like that to her.
I am not here for comments on how cereal
is fed to my child. I was here to find out
when everyone started feeding their child
cereal and I can see that this has become
a real mess. Oh, and when I did try
feeding him with a spoon.. he choked and
power puked the cereal up. So, for now he
is not getting any of it as its not
agreeing with him. I am going to give him
a few more weeks and then try cereal
again.

I'm sorry to say this but I put rice
cereal in my son's bottle and he's 11 now
so it wasn't a problem for him. I started
doing it when he was about 6 or 7 months
old because he was always hungry. There
wasn't ever an issue about choking because
it wasn't even as thick as his ordinary
food.
My DOCTOR (not nurse) was fine with this.
As long as you make sure that it is able
to flow out the nipple without plugging it
I don,t see how the baby can choke. I
wouldn't do it for a newborn but later on
I don't see the problem. My son never even
gagged when i put it in his bottle,
however he did in fact gag on some baby
food that I had given him.
I think that we sometimes need to be a
little more respectful of others on here.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions
and they don't deserve to get jumped on
because they do things differently.

i'm confused by all of you who are so
adamant about not putting it in the
bottle... don't doctors recommend putting
rice cereal in bottles for babies with
reflux?
i think it's only a choking hazard if the
mixture is too thick and you have to make
larger holes in the nipple for it. if it
can flow through the nipple without having
to do anything to it, i'd think it's fine.
it's just like formula but with a little
more substance.
it's not something i would do, but i don't
see a problem with it at all.

I used to put a little cereal in Kaylee's
bottles. She never choked & is
obviously still alive.

I have no idea, i don't really want to ge
tin a fight on here but the only thing
i've ever heard about this is when i was
at a weaning postnatal group and the
health visitor there said that putting
rice in bottles and then manipulating the
bottle is the most common reason that
paramedics are called to resusitate young
babies

I fully agree that if you have to
manipulate the nipple in any way shape or
form to allow the cereal to flow though is
definitely a choking hazard because the
bottle could break down and pieces can
come off it. you can buy the fast flow
nipples that allow for the cereal to come
though when y ou are only giving a very
small amount. Its definitely not meant to
be mixed as if you were spoon feeding it
to them.

i did it because chu wasn't getting enough
to eat with the breastmilk. In that case
he was waking up because he was hungry.
doc okayed it. not that it matters i would
have done it anyway because he was always
screaming and wanting to nurse. worked
like a charm for him. then my milk
production stopped completely and i
switched over to formula again mixed with
cereal but not every bottle like the
breastmilk. kid eats like a trucker.
still does. he eats waaaaayyyyy more than
the recommended serving sizes for a kid
his age. and he's still small.

Rice Cereal

I have to say this is a little whack since
there are actual bottles made for cereal
which I gave my boys one is now 5 and the
other is 18 months and never had a problem
with them. I would sometimes even mix in a
little applesause to the cereal.

I think times change and so do the
recommendations. When my daughter was a
baby all the doctors recommended a little
cereal in the bottle. They didn't sell
special bottles that allowed the cereal to
pass through so we had to make the hole
bigger manually. They also started babies
on food at 2 months then too and putting
babies on their backs was the biggest
NO-NO in the world, because it caused
SIDS.
Now some docs say it's ok and some say it
isn't. Jaylon's ped said absolutely not
the only thing a baby under 4 months needs
is the breast/formula and if they are
still hungry..feed them another
bottle/breast. I followed his
recommendations because he's the doc, he's
the one who went to school and got his
degree in medicine, but if he said it was
ok I would have followed that too.
To each his own

I am struggling with this issue. I fed
Nate rice cereal really early, around 3
months. As many of you know, he has had
MAJOR digestive issues. For him, I think I
may have fed him food too early. I don't
think that his digestive system was ready.
Doesn't the American Pediatrics
Association (is that the name??) suggest
to just give infants formula or breast
milk solely until six months? I just
remember reading that. I haven't really
looked into it.
Regardless, my 3 1/2 month old, Brian, is
constantly at my breast at least every two
to three hours. He sucks for at least 35
minutes. Most of the time I am on here, he
is feeding. I get nothing done. my house
is such a pit - I often trip over random
stuff. I have introduced some formula but
it doesn't seem to make much of a
difference. I am going to try to hold off
until he is at least 5 months just because
of what happened with Nathan but this is
just SOOO hard with this ravenous one.
I am lucky in that he sleeps through the
night!!! Can't complain there!!

If you're referring to ME, I wasn't saying
that *I* knew more than a nurse. But I DID
say that my DOCTOR did.
Don't be messy, it's bad for your health!
I'd suggest
stating your personal experience with the
cereal as opposed to just starting mess.

Actually, doctors DO recommend putting a
small amount of rice cereal in bottles for
some ailments. I was told to do this for
excessive spit up and poor weight gain.
Where did YOU get YOUR medical license
from???
