Bumps at the base of penis: a Rash? Warts?

Forgive me if I write a small book here, but I want to get all the facts out on the table, so bear with me.

In the past few months, I’ve noticed a number of “growths” around the base of my penis, and some on my body directly above it. I’m not sure growths is the word, but "pimples" isn’t entirely accurate, and I'm not sure "warts" is, either. Some are small, smooth bumps; some are slightly larger, and have a bit of a “bumpy” texture. Most are just a few millimeters in diameter and light pink in color, and tend to be clustered near each other at the base of my penis. They seem to be “multiplying,” though I can’t say how quickly; I just know there are a few more that weren’t there a few weeks ago.

The four or five on my body adjacent to the penis are slightly larger and slightly browner, and they’re scattered out. The largest of these looks like the moles I’ve long had elsewhere on my body; the others – smaller and lighter in color – almost look like “baby” moles.

Also (I’m just full of problems!), a couple of weeks ago, I noticed one just on the inside of my urethra. It’s round and pink, with a few (very small) white dots. I can’t say how long ago it appeared, but I’ve only noticed it in the past few weeks.

With no recent history of unprotected sex (the last time was with an ex-girlfriend, more than a year ago), I’ve ruled out any STDs. Given my family’s history of cancer (both mother and father have successfully treated theirs in the past decade), any growths on my skin are obviously alarming. But given the pictures I’ve seen of different forms of melanoma, none of these seem to fit the bill. I also haven’t read anything to suggest that skin cancer in that area of the body is common. (Though I’m still afraid of “the Big C.”) I’m 29 years old, in otherwise good health, as far as I know.

Because I’ve been traveling for a while, I haven’t seen a doctor about them yet, though I plan to in the next few weeks, when I make it to Nairobi. Since they first started appearing in late-spring, while I was traveling in the heat of the Middle East, I thought they might be some sort of heat-related rash. (I switched to a type of boxer-brief this past year that really clings to the body, and traps a lot of heat and moisture.) But I’m starting to suspect that was just wishful thinking. I don’t know whether it might be hygiene-related (some sort of fungal infection?), whether it might be caused by abrasion (I’ve grown a bit more pubic hair in the past year, and haven’t always kept it “maintained”), or whether it’s something more serious. Also, I don’t know if the pimple inside the urethra is related to the rest.

As I said, I’ll be visiting a dermatologist (or a urologist?) when I get to Nairobi in about three weeks’ time. But until then, can anyone shed some light on this? I know how hard it is to make a diagnosis like this, but do any of these symptoms sound familiar? How alarmed should I be?

Thanks for all the help!

Why have you ruled out std's? You could've gotten it from your ex. HPV can lie dormant for months and causes outbreaks of warts at random times. Or you could've gotten it from another sexual partner through manual sex or oral sex if you had either of those unprotected. (as in, you touched her, later you touched yourself) I'd get that checked out first.
