Cutting to "validate" Pain Posted: 10-31-07 00:43am
dear friends,
I am not a cutter, but I have "been there
and done that" and it is something I think
about.
I wish you all the best.
I remember that when I did it I did it for
two reasons:
1) Simply needing to take action to
express my rage/sadness even if only to
myself.
2) This is what I am referring to in my
post. I remember experiencing incredibly
strong feelings of guilt for being
depressed. I lived in suburban America, I
had wonderful parents and everything was
provided for me. My life was better than
99.99 percent of the World population's.
What right did I have, then, to be
depressed and suicidal while people starve
to death, experience war, disease, natural
cataclysms, and tremendous loss in this
World, and manage to find the will to
live?
I remember that when I would cut I would
look at the wounds and felt I had more of
a right to be upset; whatever was causing
the problem, the problem was more real; I
could actually see physical signs of the
problem, there were the cuts to prove my
pain was real, and it felt somewhat
relieving.
In my opinion, it's important that people
with depression recognize that depression
isn't the result of the problem, it is the
problem. This way, they will feel less
guilty about being depressed.

Most excellent post. Cutting is manifested
by anger, depression and guilt. The reason
why you felt good when cutting was because
you felt like you were paying the price
for you illness. You are a perfect example
of someone who will try hard enough and
care enough to put those pieces of the
puzzel together. Good for you.
How does anyone else feel about this post?
