Hyperthyroidism - drugs or the radio iodine treatment ?
Posted: 10-31-07 06:46am

My husband was just diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. He now has to choose between anti-hyperthyroidism drugs or the radio iodine treatment.
I am interested in hearing your experiences.

What is your husband experiencing?
Have you been informed that appearance of hypothyroidism after radio iodine treatment is a very common complication?
It takes less time with radio iodine treatment to has its maximum effect and controlled hyperthyroidism.

Yes, we know his options are either anti-hypertension drugs or the radio iodine treatment, and that hypothyroidism is a common complication of iodine treatment.
I do not know how well anti-hypertension drugs are tolerated.

Thank you for your response.

If your husband has a lot of symptoms, he can be recommend to take antithyroid medication first to help him feel better, and after he can decide what treatment to choose.
Antithyroid medications are usually working best if the patient has mild hyperthyroidism.
They can be very effective in controlling hyperthyroidism within a few weeks.
Uncommon side effects caused by these drugs are rash, itching, or fever.
In very rare cases, patients treated with these medications can develop liver inflammation or a deficiency of white blood cells.
So, the use of these medications must be stopped and the doctor needs to be informed, if the patient develops yellowing of the skin, has a high fever, or severe sore throat.
After the anti hyperthyroidism drugs are discontinued, the underlying hyperthyroidism often comes back.
