Hipercholesterol - any options for high cholesterol ? Posted: 11-03-07 08:42am
Hello.
I'm 22 and I have high cholesterol since
mid-2006. Even if I do diet/meals plan, my
cholesterol is always around 260. I can't
go to the gym, because I work all day and
then have classes until dinner time. And I
don't want to take medication - I'd like
to avoid that.
I've tried a few things - but I'd like to
get more opinions before I start saying
what I've already tried.
Thanks.

Do you practice diet/meals for people with
high cholesterol done by a nutritionist?
What do you usually eat?
Do you have family history of
cholesterol?
Are you stressing too much?
Do you have habit to drink alcohol and
smoke cigarettes?
Do you take birth control pills and what
are they consisted of?

Hi.
Here in Portugal, doctors don't pay
attention to this problems.. They just
prescribe you pills, which is generally
not good.
So, answering your questions:
No, I do practice any kind of plan done by
a nutritionist, because they don't do that
here - it's not common. I'm careful with
what I eat. I drink Benecol (or things
equal to it) at breakfast, have about 4
pieces of fruit everyday, have whole
cereal bread, turkey ham (I avoid regular
ham), avoid red meat, don't have pastries
nor cakes/sweets, etc. I don't drink - I
only drunk socially, but now I don't even
do that - and I don't smoke.
Yes, my dad's sister has hipercholesterol
as well - that how i found out I had
genetic hipercholesterol.
I'm stressing a lot... I work full-time, I
study, I have a lot of work to do - I
sleep late because I work after I get home
from school, after dinner, and then I get
up early to go to work. Besides, my dad's
ill...
I take brith control pills, Harmonet: each
pill contains 20mcg of ethinyl estradiol
and 75mcg of a progestin. :S

Birth control pills can affect cholesterol
levels and its effect depends on the type
of pill you're taking and what
concentration of estrogen or progestin it
contains.
The estrogen in birth control pills causes
an increase in HDL cholesterol levels (the
"good" cholesterol), a decrease in LDL
cholesterol levels (the "bad" cholesterol)
and an increase in your total cholesterol
and triglyceride levels. Progestin in
birth control pills has the opposite
effect.
Birth control pills with a greater
concentration of estrogen can have a
slightly beneficial overall effect on your
blood lipid levels.
BC pills effects depend on the combination
of the type and level of progestin and the
level of estrogen.
You can talk with your gynecologist about
potential link between high cholesterol
and BC pills.
Stress is one of the major cause of
increased level of cholesterol.
Do you feel pressing, crushing pain behind
the breastbone, radiating to the arm or to
the neck, when your are physically active
or its appearance is associated with cold?
Have you noticed whitish streaks on the
skin around your eyes?
Have you been checked for an underactive
thyroid gland?
Is your blood sugar level in normal
ranges?
